This episode was a third birthday special! To mark 3 years since I first took the plunge and started doing these shows, I decided it would be nice to fill the first hour entirely with tracks from previous guest DJs. I had great fun cramming in as many tracks as I could, working up from 100 to 125 BPM over the course of the hour, with appearances from 21 previous guests as well as a cheeky new one from myself. 

I managed to bag a very special guest for the second hour, someone I’ve been trying to get on the show for a while now - Mexico’s very own Hotmood! He’s one of the most respected, talented and prolific producers in our scene, putting out a seemingly endless string of releases on all sorts of labels, but never letting the quality slip. His tracks make regular appearances on my show and I’m proud to have  released an EP on his label Discoweey.

This mix is made up entirely of his own stuff, and it’s great - loads of his trademark exotic, quirky, obscure, fruity sound and of course razor sharp production throughout. Big, big thanks to Guillermo for sending me this great mix, and big big thanks to each and every one of you who has listened to the show over the last 3 years. I really really appreciate it, and can’t wait to bring you more shows with more excellent guests soon!

Funkier Radio 3rd Birthday (Episode 81) - Hotmood Guest Mix

The universe did its best to scupper this episode, with a no show from my scheduled guest and a corrupted USB stick nearly spelling the end. But somehow it prevailed, with a rushed reformatting and partial reloading of the USB and an heroic last minute effort from my replacement special guest. More on that in a minute. 

My half of the show was heavy on the promos, with new sounds from Folkness, Dr Packer, Ken@Work, The Magic Track, Dexter Jones, TURF as well as an absolute blinder of a track from Magnolia that’s about to drop on The Disco Express. I also road tested a couple of bits that I’ve been busy with in the studio over the last week or so. 

We very nearly ended up with two hours of me as the guest I had lined up let me down, but fortunately I was rescued by an up and coming DJ from Duisburg, Germany. Jasmin, AKA Jay-Kay is the fiancee of fellow Disco Walton DJ BK, and she very kindly stepped in at a moment’s notice to save the day. She’s new to DJing but already getting out there with various guest mix appearances, including one with DJ BK just the day before this one for The Disco Waltons Sunday Service. 

Despite being new to the game Jasmin has mixed up a treat for us, with selections covering disco, chunky retro boogie, chugging spacey nu-disco, some Madonna, some Chaka Khan, even some Prince… what a lovely selection!

I’m hugely grateful for Jasmin for volunteering at such short notice and saving everyone from two hours of me, and I love the fact that she’s so willing to practise and put her mixes out there despite being a relative newcomer. Can’t wait to meet her at ADE in a couple of months!

Inevitably there was no Goulash Disko festival this year, but as we were still allowed to travel to that gorgeous island a small group of us gathered on Kamenice Beach (in a safe manor), and felt extremely lucky and grateful to be able to play music and share in a very special vibe!

Upon return my animal friends Feline and Munki helped me try to recreate that vibe for all to hear.  Big shouts to the Stonefish massive, and big love to all the Goulash family both missed and present!  <3

Don Mescal is a dj, a producer and the co-founder of Cosmovision Records, a well-established label renowned worldwide for its dedication to downtempo music.With over 25 years of DJing experience, he is a true magician of musical diversity— a character full of energy & love, who has a huge repertoire of songs that will catch your senses and awakens your emotions. Inspired by folkloric multiculturalism, he loves to experiment with the traditions of world music and knows how to transfer it into a modern perspective to brew an electronic-music-elixir with that extra drop of mescal flavor. His unique musical voyage combines a well-selected myriad of styles from Downtempo, Folktronica, Indie Dance & Organic House, all delivered with a vibrant, joyful flair. Don has toured around the world over the past years and got crowds dancing in clubs and festivals such as Boomtown (UK), Burning Man (USA), Piknik Electronik, Bambou Huts (Koh Phanghan), Envision Fest (Costa Rica), klunkerkranich & Beate Uwe (Belin), Solstice Fest (Guatemala) ...
