As proud Bari native, Dona Basile has made a home off the beaten path: this might be one key ingredient in his secret mix. Here he ran vinyl destination EXP Records until early last year, providing a stream of exposure to new music that has surely had a hand in his unusual aesthetic. He’s hard to pin down (though KAOS, Ilian Tape and Mannequin have tried), delegating passions across his Dona and DJ Plant Texture aliases. His floral pseudonym ostensibly reserved for everything sample-based, breakbeat and techno. That’s only half true though, his aural experiments are much more nuanced: infused with flavours as varied as techno and jungle, as well as jazz, funk and house, not to mention the hardware tricks he plays to further push his sound. This podcast lays his idiosyncrasies bare, swaying melodies and psychedelic synths escalating into rattling rhythms and frantic and strident big room loops. Bassiani Podcast 174 is a leftfield studio mix from this obscure Italian mastermind.

Adding to his rich catalogue, his label debut on SHDW’s Mutual Rytm sub-label X is a homage to the spirit of space travel. With the label boss already a long-time fan and having dropped tracks from this EP in his sets for a while, the partnership creates an ideal match for an artist and label looking to push the boundaries of the genre. With Basile’s distinctive style perfectly fitting with the label’s vision, each of the productions provides a tribute to space exploration - fusing analogue hardware and deep rhythmic invention while channelling everything from early sci-fi cinema to the 80s ambient soundtracks. “Space exploration is the ultimate metaphor for creative freedom. This album is my way of sonically mapping the cosmos, not through melody but through mood, modulation and motion”, notes Basile.

Opener ‘Wormhole’ is a raw, driving sound with synth pulses and jacked-up drums for peak time chaos, while ‘Echoes’ evokes ramps it up further with panel-beating percussive loops, earth-shattering bass and twisted stabs. The title track pairs more physical and booming drums with introspective synth craft that encourages deep thought. ‘Flex The Beat’ is the first of two digital only cuts and offers a chaotic collision of overdrive percussion, manic vocal loops and reversed stabs for utter dance floor carnage, before ‘Let It Go’ (Jungle Mix) provides a dark exploration of frenzied jungle breakbeats with drilling bass to close the offering.

The fourth edition of SHDW’s flagship ‘Federation Of Rytm’ VA series has been carefully curated by the DJ/ producer and head honcho over more than a year, with close attention to detail given to sequencing. It is a balance of label regulars and debutants that represents the past, present, and future, both sonically and through the generational diversity of the artists involved. There are plenty of surprises along the way while always remaining true to the Mutual Rytm ethos and reflecting the journey of the night from start to finish, whether that's in intimate, sweaty clubs or on big festival stages.

"I’ve lived with most of these tracks for over a year, testing them on the dancefloor and fine-tuning the selection. Each comes from artists I deeply admire, making this compilation a snapshot of the label’s evolution and a glimpse of what’s next. ‘Federation Of Rytm IV’ celebrates connection across generations, while capturing the sounds that inspire me most — telling a story from start to finish.” – SHDW.

Across 30 tracks in the digital collection and 24 on four sides of wax, the release explores the full breadth of the Mutual Rytm sound. Driving grooves and relentless percussion set the pace, gradually unfolding into hypnotic and atmospheric passages that invite deeper immersion. Pulsating low-end power alternates with eerie minimalism, while bursts of futuristic energy and cavernous kick drums keep the tension high. Elsewhere, dub textures and moments of introspection provide balance, creating a narrative arc that moves fluidly between intensity and release, atmosphere and tension, darkness and light.

Having a background made of drums, percussions and piano studies, Dona has soon found his own path experimenting with machines. 
Constantly looking to redefine his barriers and enhance his sound design skills, Dona has been plumbing the depths of Electronic music, ranging from Jungle and Drum Bass to Acid and Techno by passing thru Ambient and Electronics. 
Proudly supporter of the vinyl format, he runs a record shop in Bari - South of Italy (EXP RECORDS), which is now an important base for the local scene.
