Trying To Make It To Heaven

Donald Lee Myers began composing at age ten. As a parched Southern California transplant, he eagerly relocated to the foggy, seaside village of Aptos, CA. There, Don studied composition and gamelan with Lou Harrison (1917 – 2003) . Out of his many students, Mr. Harrison chose Don to be his teaching assistant: an honor and distinction Don held until Lou’s passing. He credits Lou for liberating his distinctive and vibrant style that Composer/Music Director/Mentor Robert Ian Winstin (1959–2010) called his greatest asset. “His music makes...[musicians] want to...[assist] the listener [in] understand[ing] the complexity and underlying components that make...[it] so unique.”
Other mentors include Sue Brown, Director of the Picasso Ensemble (String Practice & Theory), Dr. Daniel Wyman, San Jose State University (Orchestration), and Dr. Annette Leseige (1947-2012), New Jersey City University (Theory & Analysis). Since 2006, his music has received annual ASCAP PLUS Awards. From 2007-8, Don was twice awarded an honorable mention from the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute. His work, Meditation in Three Refletions garnered an American Composers Forum Subito (Jerome Foundation) grant. In February, 2009, ERMMEDIA’s CEO, Robert Ian Winstin commissioned Mr. Myers to compose a suite for the 1902 film classic: Le Voyage dans la Lune. The DVD/CD box set distributed through Naxos was released by January, 2010. The 2009-10 season saw Don as an Emerging Composer–In–Residence with the Berkeley Symphony in Berkeley, CA. In 2011, Don began a hiatus from composition to re- examine his artistic goals. That concluded in 2021 with inception of his 24 Preludes & Fugues. In addition, 2021 witnessed Don’s first ASCAP PLUS Awards in ten years. 2022-2023 bestowed Mr. Myers with an ASCAP PLUS Awards for work on his 24 Preludes & Fugues. 2024, Don was again granted an ASCAP PLUS Awards for progress on his 24 Preludes and Fugues. Don is eager to complete his 24 Preludes & Fugues and he is again entering composition competitions. He looks forward to an exciting future.
