This week we have DJ’s Jackatak, Hame One & Antidote who combine their turntable skills and musical styles for a multi-genre mix with seamless transitions. We start with music from the bass end of the spectrum from Opiuo, JPOD and the classic dub version of Witness by Roots Manuva, moving onto 90’s hip hop from Lords of the Underground, Main Source and Showbiz & AG. The beats get heavy and the tempo increases with the Leisure All-stars, Krafty kuts & Mooqee before dropping into dubstep and through D n B, breaks and beats from DJ Zinc, Bassbin twins and Mr Ozio.

The podcast is full of music released in the 90s. Not all of it, but a lot of it. Nothing to do with thinking no one’s making good tunes at the moment and everything released in the 90s was brilliant. Just wanted to do something that was quite manky and a bit mad… A lot of the tunes sound quite grungy and a bit shady, but that’s what we went for on this one. Some of it’s not really mixed, it’s not a DJ set so it doesn’t really have to be. Lots of tracks are just mashed into each other, sometimes using field recordings or sound from films and interviews, and other times just using bits from different songs, like Pan Sonic madness. There’s no real theme to it, the audio extracts in there are all unrelated, some from a trip to Japan, a bit from a youtube interview, bits from a film i watched while working on the podcast. None of it’s new apart from a few bits from ourselves. Hopefully there’s a lot of stuff inside people haven’t heard.

This coming Monday, 22nd Spetember Clouds will release a sampler of the forthcoming "I Care Because You Don't" compilation coming out October 2014.

Heir apparent to the UK techno throne, Clouds have been gaining credibility with each release. With their LP Ghost Systems Rave, 12"s on Fifth Wall and Soma, and their latest Tannhauser Acid Works EP, they've reached beyond the warehouse and into the wild apocalyptic rubble of po-mo UK hardcore. 

Their lead track Blood Skating is an industrial blitz of terror-beats, laced with a haunting, Aphex-grade vocal pad. It sets the tone for this incredible release, which they've A&R'd out of thin air, apparently from their mates in Dundee, Perth, and the surrounding mud-lands. 

The 12" sampler features DJ Hesburger's 'Roll Up Your Sleeves, Welcome to the Dance,' an awesome slice of overdriven acid electro that sounds like MPIA3 on MDMA. Jane 'Fuck Your Alliance' is proper mental brain dance, while Dance Company's ‘Berzerkerz’ sounds like an unearthed hardcore anthem from 92.

In 2010, we saw the release of tracks that are now considered classics such as Wut, Work Them, CMYK, Maze and of course a little edit of Drake's Fireworks by a South London producer named Deadboy. At the time, it was a remix that gained a lot of attention and, more close to home, it became an all-time favourite for us here at Truants. A lot has changed since then, but Deadboy's outlook has firmly always been to make all types of music with no limitations on genre - an outlook which has since seen him gain a sizeable following, be it his numerous releases on labels such as Numbers or his varied DJ sets. We had the pleasure of catching him play at Bussey Building in London near the beginning of the year and seeing him comfortably work his way through dancehall, grime, garage, house and bassline remixes of Kate Bush to a packed out dance floor was incredible and refreshing to say the least.

With exclusive tracks from a forthcoming release on Local Action alongside cuts in collaboration with Murlo and Gongon, our 102nd Truancy Volume sees Deadboy guide us through a host of freshly produced productions as well as music from similar contemporary peers. Clocking in at an hour in length, Truants favourites Moleskin, Sudanim, Throwing Shade, M.E.S.H and Mssingno all feature as well as tracks from Young Thug and Chief Keef keeping everyone on their toes.

Inspired by the 30th Anniversary of Nottingham's legendary DiY Collective, this mix features a collection of music created across that timespan by musicians and producers from within the DiY core,close associates & the wider house music family that drew inspiration from the trailblazing musical, hedonistic & cultural blitzkrieg that they spearheaded throughout the 1990s and beyond. Nottingham area producers such as Inland Knights / Andy Riley  , Neil Tolliday (aka Nail / Bent) - Charles Webster(aka Furry Phreaks)Rhythm Plate(also Yse Saint Laur'Ant), Ron Basejam, Schmoov- all included here -  emerged from this scene and era, many releasing their debut releases on DiY Discs. 
DiY's importance  within the house music world and the wider culture - mainly in UK but also internationally, while surely not yet fully recognised, should not be underestimated. As well as  being in the vanguard of promoting underground house music through their own early 90's club nights and parties in Nottingham , their mix tape releases and record label, DiY were one of the first to fuse house music , free festival ethos and Jamaican sound system culture, creating DiY Sound System.
Along with other like-minded maverick musical warriors they pioneered the outdoor /countryside/ under the stars/ summer free party. This irrevocably changed thousands of people's lives,  altered their way of looking at the world and suggested how we might live and socialise...
In pursuit of this utopian vision, property / drug and other laws were violated for the greater good and DiY put their personal safety/liberty on the line every weekend across those heady summers in the 90's,  to entertain and enlighten.
The well documented gathering at Castlemorton in May 1992, marked a  turning point. DiY  were one of the few systems flying the flag for underground "proper" house music....
Direct DiY action against the now infamous Criminal Justice Bill followed-  Other sound systems, notably Smokescreen, picked up the mantle in the 90s.
Of course, the utopian vision didn't materialise & as happens in such heady hedonistic worlds, there were deaths, prosecutions, jailings, social and  personal misdemeanours and casualties en route.......but hey, what a journey for those involved, and what a legacy. 
Many DiYers are still out there agitating, educating and organising to this day.
Their free party blueprint laid solid foundations, and in spite of restrictions that have curtailed the ability of anyone to recreate what DiY achieved in that decade, austerity driven Police cuts have seen a renaissance in recent years.
All of the tracks included here are made by people who have direct connection to DiY or who grew up in or adopted  Nottingham East Midlands region as their home. Includes as yet unreleased tracks from "newer" Nottingham producers such as Jamie Deep and Coxie.

"It's Black O'er Bill's Mothers" - A Celebration of DiY Collective & Nottingham House Music (Part 1)

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
