Have I Told You

Recorded in 1999, ‘Feels Like It Flows (Flows Like It Should)’ is considered by many (close friends and family) to be closest thing to a concept album released by the elusive solo artist. Largely consisting of original material, the album is produced in the style more reminiscent of a mix-set, the material intertwined with audio memories taken from records that span across many different times and genres.

The previous two years leading up the recording of this record saw the most dramatic shift, stylistically speaking, in the output of the solo artist. The melting pot of influences was providing the perfect tonic to ignite the creative flame, and this – combined with him fast becoming both an accomplished musician and a capable studio engineer – allowed the ensuing ideas to be captured and presented to the listening public. As the recorded output of Gone to Earth ground to halt in 1997, Andy Birch found opportunities to work with many new artists. Collaborating with Ape Candiru, spells with Fireband and Raindogs, and as part of the S-Deck Collective, he found many talented and receptive artists and musicians to bounce ideas off and open up new musical paths to explore. Listening to the various works of the time, you can hear the progression towards more experimental music – or at least a complete unwillingness to close the door on any potential avenue.

Amongst this non-compromising time, Andy set to work on a single piece of musical performance – what would become known as ‘Feels Like It Flows (Flows Like It Should)’. The title represents both how the sound was created, and how – it was hoped – how the listener would respond. The whole product was finished within just a few days, during what was effectively one session. Speaking years later of the recording, “...I remember being involved in a lot of different projects – it was at a time when we had been doing things for long enough that were actually starting to get OK, but while we were still young, naive and arrogant enough to not realise where we actually stood in the scheme of things. It’s when everything feels pretty easy. I actually don’t remember much of ‘Feel Like..’, but I do remember it going down quick, just like one song, and just liking the result. I think that’s what makes it – it just feels like a journey that takes you places, but has you back by morning.”

Largely ignored at the time – unsurprisingly for such an experimental (and instrumental) piece, and with other projects taking the limelight – ‘Feels Like...’ has become a fan* favourite largely for these very reasons. And with such a varied sound, it is still a little mystifying that some of the musical ideas touched upon here have never been further explored in later work. Not yet at least.

Feels Like It Flows (Flows Like It Should)

Lying dormant for more than twenty years, Donk Azure has, and continues to be, largely unheard of. Attempting to recount the life – artistic or otherwise – of the elusive performer has proven a tall order for all those that have tried*

As far as we know, the very first noises to have been made by Donk were as recent as 2010. These noises immediately found an audience thanks to those ever so lovely people at <a href="http://amazingradio.co.uk/">Amazing Radio</a>, and before long Donk was enjoying dream-like success with his very first noise, <a href="http://donkazure.co.uk/music/have-i-told-you">Have I Told You</a> , making its way to No.1 in the <a href="http://amazingradio.co.uk/chart">Amazing Charts</a>.

Success breeds intrigue – and as the journalists quenched their investigative thirst, so they painted an alarming image of a struggling figure, at odds with the world around him. Shambolic and unfinished records alongside faltering radio interviews only served to increase the intrigue and speculation as more and more were asking, “Who is Donk Azure?”

Almost anything you’ve read about Donk is most likely a lie – and more than likely it was written by the man himself. What we do know about him is course the fact that he is a plasticine man. And what we know about plasticine men is that they are prone, in more or less equal measures, to exaggeration, pretentiousness and self-aggrandising. It comes as a surprise, then, that Donk is one of only a handful of plasticine artists seen today in the music industry.

Yes, that’s right, it was all leading up to that one ‘joke’.
