Heartbreak had befallen him before this discovery and he finds it difficult to control his new found power. He compares himself to a phoenix that must burn to rise from the ashes.

It explore themes of romance, fairytale and is an attempt to capture a moment of reflection on love, its gestures, the emotions that come with it, and to describe what’s it like to be in that vulnerable state of feeling or perhaps thinking emotions out loud.

SHE is a spoken word poetry film. In this piece Donnell Asare performs his poem of the same title. The performance explores the intricacies of emotion and the experience of femininity from the male perspective. The piece also explores toxic masculinity and stereotypes of men.

He lives off the land and often stargazes until the sun rises. This is his routine. This poem was inspired by Stephen King’s poem “Your hair is winter fire...”

SOLAR by Donnell Asare 🌻 | This poem is about reflection. This is a story about a young man who almost completes his quest of capturing the sun and in that triumphant moment, it slips out of the young man’s hands, for many reasons such as complacency and he plummets to the ground. It is the human condition to be fallible, and I wanted to express that as best as I could from my point of view.

This project was a reflection on perhaps doing things differently in the past, not necessarily from a place of regret but a moment of picturing alternative outcomes or things turning out differently - if you had acted differently.
Often I search my myself and ask “A hundred times, would I do the same thing?” Often I find that If there is an instance where I would act differently, I would think deeply about it and make decisions to move forward accordingly. You can’t change what was but you can change what will be. This is what growth is, it is about addressing the innermost parts, the vulnerability and being true to one’s self. Alegría by Donnell Asare 🌱| Alegría means Joy in Spanish. This poem is about youth. These are the words of an unapologetic dreamer. 2 Corinthians 12:15 in the bible - “So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well. If I love you more, will you love me less?” is such a poetic scripture to me, and really captured the theme of a selfless unfaltering love that I wanted to touch on. Paul had written to the church in Corinth, Greece and he was talking about how though he increased in his love for them they grew colder and more indifferent to him - yet this could not hinder him in his love for them.

Additionally it was my intention to play my own interpretation of Peter Pan, and with the visuals and the writing, I hoped to present a youthful demeanour with subtle angst. I also wanted to explore themes of masculinity and femininity at the same time. On another note, I think that as young people mature into “adults” , some tend to lose their imagination instead of nurture it, which to me is tragic, so this piece was a commentary on that also. A grey day with the right person doesn’t seem so bad at all. In general this piece is inspired by the certain cool and serenity that comes about with these days.
