In the '90s I was making a record in San Francisco and our producer met with Tom Hanks about possibly being the music director for a movie about a band.
He came back from his meeting with Tom and asked if we could write a song called That Thing You Do--it needed to be a 60's sounding song that was kind of an early Beatles ripoff.
I wrote this/our producer didn't get the gig /the guy who wrote the great song for the movie (Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne) ended up producing our band's final album for RCA/ now I'm an offshoot band with the guy (Mike Viola) who sang the song for the movie. What a chain of events. 

That Thing You Do

Here's an outtake from the "13 Satellites" sessions back in 2011 - a stripped back read on one of my favorite Neil Finn songs from his "One Nil" LP.  Featuring Jason Wormer on guitar & Vanessa Wormer on those angelic background vocals & Billy Hawn on percussion. This recording was actually started back in January 2008, when I was in the final weeks of my chemotherapy treatments (the remaining lead vocal is live from that session)  Years later, we did some more work on it during the "13 Satellites" sessions, and this is an acoustic mix from those efforts.  It's always been an anthem of sorts for me, but at the time it became an empowering prayer against the darkness...
