The sonic backdrop is the instrumentation of the 1970's  a Miles Davis-Esque/ Jimi Hendrix-esque improvisatory band sound. It sounds like something you might've heard at the Woodstock Festival or the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. In prose I deal with some very tough social issues in this song involving, race, social class, cultural norms, self-identity, esteem, ethnicity, and equality. This song explores the disparity in how "blacks" and whites" are treated in social commentary, and in the Operatic traditional style the verse by Mashica "unites" the human bond of brotherhood as a personification of the "Mother of ALL" who unites us despite our superficial differences.
I was moved reading an article about how German POW's were allowed in the south to visit towns, bathrooms, and buy beer, in venues where black soldiers where denied and I thought, wow was it so much better to be "white" and still be Nazi, than to be "black" and an American Soldier? this let me know how sick prejudice can be. A man or woman is only as good as what he or she “contributes to society” not the outer package of their skin, race or ethnicity and that's what this songs peaks to. There were many "whites" and "blacks" who died side by side for the abolition of slavery and Jim Crow. The color of skin NEVER dictates the intention or the ability of the person.

Dopeness! Playing in D'Angelo's first Voodoo band ’99 was one of the biggest musical learning experiences I've ever had. I was enthralled by the organic and intoxicating sounds of the soul, and funk textures. 
 On "Summer Cookout" I was going for a DMV ie. Maryland, DC, Virginia sound that is heavily influenced by the black church and soul music. The song describes a summer day of good Baltimore Seafood, a picnic or BBQ, friends, family, kids playing, cars driving through Druid Hill Park, sexy women, drinks, smiles and laughter in the air. I tried to capture a full warm hot summer's day in the city.
To do this what better ingredient then Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson who is a sonic architect of Vodoo, Adam Blackstone, both Philly's finest, and Baltimore guitarist Darryl Pearson who is one of my hero's from all the Timbaland and Jodeci records. I also employed guitarist Shon Hinton who played with the gospel quartet group the Williams Brother's, my Mentor Roy Hargrove who played on Vodoo, my wife Mashica who knows church music cold, and JK who sang with the soulquarians. On organ I used Timbaland cohort Craig Brockman. Lastly I added my signature Vocoder for the hook and my Jimi hendrix style pedal on my trumpet for a bit of extra grease and emotional cry.
