On Tuesday, 2nd November, Kampala-based festival, label and creative platform Nyege Nyege brought electronic sounds from across sub-Saharan Africa directly to Refuge Worldwide.

Founded in 2013 and hosting the Nyege Nyege Festival since 2015, Nyege Nyege illuminates the undercurrents of pan-African contemporary music and promotes a cross-breed of African and European underground dance sensibilities. “Dope underground music, that’s what we’re about. Just dope music,” says Arlen Dilsizian, co-founder of Nyege Nyege Tapes.

In the past decade, Uganda has birthed a growing number of homegrown electronic scenes influenced by traditional sounds such as plucked notes of the Ennanga harp and the fervent drumming of courting dances.

Meeting on the Romanian ocean-side during Sunwaves music festival in 2014 was no surprise as this lady has an obvious pair of well trained ears, making her underground knowledge very distinctive and her own personal sound as a DJ very unique. Having worked at one of London's most loved record stores (Blackmarket Records) for over 6 years and with an particular enthusiasm for vinyl, she was a valuable member of staff and asset to the store. It really is no wonder that Georgia has had the pleasure to play at underground institutions such as fabric and Club der Visionaere. Currently a resident for London’s notorious after-party, Keep on Going and with various guest bookings around the globe, she regularly plays alongside other talented artists and is highly regarded amongst her peers. Karen Gwyer joins DBA for an exercise in futurist dancefloor electronics after a recent outing on Alien Jams alongside Beatrice Dillon and last year’s barnstorming Nous release. The US-born Londoner brings the sound of her stomping, analogue live performances closer to the psychedelic, thickly melodic tone of her studio compositions across three tracks, with Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase an obvious choice for DJs.

Following early feet-finding yet highly acclaimed releases on Patten’s Kaleidoscope label and No Pain In Pop, Gwyer has gone on to solidify her place in the quasi-underground techno scene with more acclaimed recordings on labels such as Nous Disques, Alien Jams and Opal Tapes, for which she toured twice. She has also produced remixes for the likes of Nous, Warp, Software and Public Information, and created a number of commissioned pieces for Open Music Archive.
