Program Notes:

 December 26th, 1914 represents the viewpoints of soldiers on different sides in WWI after the famous Christmas truces of 1914. When battle continued the next day, the fighting was even more devastating because soldiers were fighting enemies they had befriended. The common pitches and the sleigh bells are representative of the fact that all the soldiers were in the same battle, while the rhythm and occasional pitch changes show the different soldiers interpretations and the brief moments of clarity among the chaos. The low tom and splash chokes are symbolic of the artillery and bombing of the trenches that could suddenly destroy an entire section of the trenches. The ending is left unresolved because a soldier that has faced the horrors of war never truly gets over it. The beginning section labeled “Eerie” represents the strange feeling and unease of the soldiers.  The developing melody is representative of the slowly building fighting as the soldiers ignored their conciseness and continued to fight. The section labeled “Berserk” is when the fighting reaches its peak. The section labeled “Suddenly Stopped” is when the artillery fires at the trenches, stopping all ground combat. The section labeled “Hysterically” represents a solider that enters a state of hysteria after seeing his companions die. The section labeled “Remorsefully” is the remorse the soldiers feel after many of their friends (enemy and ally) are found dead after the fighting, sometimes by their own hand.  

Performance Notes:
The set up of non-pitched percussion is left up to the composer. It is recommended that the Sleigh Bells be tied around the left or right leg and played by bouncing the leg while making as little extraneous noise as possible. The kick drum should be set to either the left or right side of the marimba and played with a double pedal that extends to where ever the performer is most comfortable. The sleigh bells should not be tied around the same leg that is playing the kick drum. The low tom and splash cymbal should be in front of the marimba postioned in a way where the performer can play the tom-crash motive with one hand (1-2, or 3-4).The staccatos on the kick drum and low tom should be played as dead strokes, while the staccatos on the marimba during the chorale section should be tapped.

I wanted to see what I could do with the melody of the piece above in a 5/4 time signature with minimal instrumentation and this is what I got.

Program Notes:

This piece takes a look at the characteristics and feelings experienced with manic depression also known as bipolar disorder. Harsh tones and theatrical expressions are used to portray the different stages of the illness.

South Pole, the first movement guides the listener through the persistent thoughts of sadness and emptiness. In the second movement, North Pole, the structure of the piece demonstrates the uncontrollable and rapid thought patterns of a manic state. This energetic movement depicts the elevated mood and hyperactivity associated with mania. The final moment, Static, captures the experience of a mixed state, which may include rapid thoughts of anger and depression as well as hallucinations and/or feelings of paranoia.

Performance Notes:

Over pressure and scratch tones: Over pressure, abbreviated “O.P.”, is a technique that requires the performer to draw the bow slowly while applying extra pressure in order to achieve a scratchy, distorted sound. A scratch tone is similar to O.P., but uses even more pressure to eliminate the fundamental pitch. 
Pizzicato tremolo: Pizzicato tremolo is performed by taking a fine toothed comb and rubbing it against the string in the same matter as bowing. This will only work going in one direction and requires re-prepping before each rub. The comb may also be used to “strike” the strings producing a pizzicato sound.
Buzz pizzicato: A buzz pizzicato is performed by placing a finger on the left hand next to the string being plucked in way that the string will vibrate against the finger nail. This creates a slight buzz.
Acting: Both the sobbing and the laughter in movements I and II respectively must sound authentic. The appearance of the performers must remain absolutely unaffected, as if the sound is coming from elsewhere, or be completely animated. Both the sobbing and the laughter must be performed the same way in regards to animation. Alternatively, if the performers are uncomfortable crying or laughing, a performer or performers off stage may be utilized. If several performers are being used, it would be preferable for the performers to be mixed into the audience.
Sob:  The sobbing should start at the first indication, and continue seamlessly through the second. The sobbing should start quietly and rapidly increase in volume, then gradually decrease in volume. The entire process should take no less than 15 seconds but no more than 45 seconds. Moans and screams are encouraged but should not be used in excess.
Laughter: The laughter should be sudden, loud, and hysterical. Duration should be no longer than 10 seconds. The performers should display a range of emotion from joyful to hysterical for the rest of the movement. 
Foot stomps: Foot stomps should be separated, rhythmically random and dynamically consistent. 1-3 stomps per second, maximum.
Double Stop Dynamics: In movement III mm. 79-80 the double stops have different dynamics for each string. This can be accomplished by applying slightly more weight to the louder string. At the bottom of the decrescendo the bow should be completely off the string. 
Seesaw: The seesaw technique is performed by rapidly moving the bow across all four strings one or two strings at a time.
