PREMIERE: Stefan Vincent - Yonghegong Lama Temple Exit F [Musar]

In the latest installment of their VA Point series, On Board Music looks to a plethora of talented artists such as ASC, Polygonia, Morphing Territories, and our focus for today, Nuversion. Not a stranger to us at Delayed, as we’ve highlighted him before with a stellar Delayed with… mix. Nuversion, formerly Juliano, has delivered a dubbed out energetic number titled, Impression.

As Impression unfolds,  the bassline takes center stage, a deep and groovy force that pulses through the track, creating a solid foundation for the entirety. Delicate echoes and reverberations dance around the edges of the mix, adding a sense of space and intrigue as off kilter synths bounce to and fro.

Impression, and the rest of the Point E release will be out into the world on the 25th of August.

This was only available on archive.org, so I decided to upload it here. This mix bent my head in every way when I first heard it in 2009, and still holds up. Heavy club action front to back.

Brit badboys Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 have been purveyors of some of our favorite music this year, between getting creative with new, self-coined genres (dubblestep? hyper bass?) and bodying dancefloors and headphones with their regular Night Slugs club nights and mix show on Sub.FM. They're about to drop a Night Slugs EP, so to promo it they made this mix of all their actual dubplates, most of which sounds like seeing yourself getting injected with adrenalin from the vein-and-blood cell point of view a la CSI/House. Sprung with boingy syncopated basslines, triumphant twerky synths, they're working in the most basic confines of genre—bassline, funky, garage, whatever—but have a super fresh, nigh cartoony approach that inspires energy and reflects creativity.

DJ Hockey approaches techno by intermingling layers of contrasting elements. Defining characteristics for his productions are grounded, thick, encompassing atmospheres often on the introspective side. Psychedelia is present in all of his musical expressions, crafting dynamic journeys resulting in playful and groovy sets.

With releases on labels Model Future, PPRZ and RF Records, DJ Hockey works to propel his interpretation of techno with his production work.

1. Red Giant opens the EP with gentle, dusty percussions, eerie atmospheres and cavernous low end sub. Delayed claps create swirling wind ontop of the steady pace.

2. Kuiper Belt is a tool effective at infusing a reserved moment in a 4/4 set, or making a transition from electro to 4/4 techno. Gentle melodies and hypnotic elements glide over the kicks and snares.

3. Andromeda is a scifi inspired 909 workout. Grooving toms, aggressive snares and spacey claps float around a vox sample while intensity builds from the synths until take off.

4. Starburst is a layerable tool with a strong kick and sparkly arpeggiated synthline which modulates throughout. Simple yet effective percussions provide build up and release through-out this straight forward melter.

Pipiltzintzintli EP is designed as a concept-opus around the notion of psychedelia in electronic music. It is conceived exclusively using sounds from hardware synthesizers and modular systems.

The repetitive motifs are chosen here for their organic and cerebral aspect; they act physically on the listener, the intention being to seek out sounds that act like active principles, like psychotrops. The idea is also to maintain a rather minimalist approach, with reduced use of percussive and/or melodic elements. Multilayering is used here to access a deeper sonic dimension, to tap into the inner self, a mental image like an imaginary, unconscious landscape. 
There's also an acidic dimension to the album, with references to a whole section of the history of repetitive electronic music: Warp's pre-2000s period with LFO and the distinctive sound of early Plastikman are particularly present here. The opus is rounded off by the unique touch of producer friends Gëinst, Inerit and Accou, who all revisit a track of their choice in their own way.
