An Englishman in Sofia

It was a self-chosen prophecy from another life
That connected me to reside here via a former wife
My hat is truly rested in this adopted home
Not sure of most words spoken, found peace here all alone
When in Rome, I have adapted to a different pace
A brand new place where people can see the colour of my face
And just like anywhere some people think they know
But just like anywhere, real people also grow
The funtimes flow even though the grind of life is a struggle
People meeting, people greeting, double kiss or a cuddle
Far less trouble, more respect to elders (wisdom) is the key
Socialist past, east meets western philosophy
By no means free, corrupted government keeps some people down
Bit more free, summer night parks thriving all through town
My London town could learn a lesson from this little place
So send me to outer space, to find another race

I’m making steps, however small, to integrate the lingo
Nastravey, opa lanka, as sum skritta limonka
Like the feel of the language as it slips off my tongue
Sure it’ll suit me once my studies have begun
Now the flavours of the food are for me very normal
On a scale from delicious all the way down to awful
I gotta say you can’t go wrong with a bit of banitsa
But I still haven’t mastered the taste of lutanitsa
Good wine, good beer, lots of options to choose
Mastika i rakia, lots of options for booze
But these things fade away to the spirit of the people
Sometimes look my way and feel they are not equal
But all I see are people with a huge amount of soul
With laughter full of beauty, has really filled the hole
I had before I came here, but that’s another story
Full of music, Sofian songbirds sing my story
