For Secret Thirteen journal we have worked on a special slowed down techno recording in the spirit of the live sets we have did for Polar Inertia’s recent exhibitions in Brussels and CCA, Tbilisi.

A couple of months ago we have changed all our gear and equipment, and collected new machines but somehow never had enough time to meet altogether and wire them. Finally, we have decided to hook up our new musical gear and equipment to improvise the future of Polar Inertia’s sound.

It was one of those studio jams you do not want to rush to. We took our time. Slowed down the tempo to 112 bpm and sent all synths through a multitrack recorder to catch every moment of the jam session. During hours of knob twisting we went through several states of mind and different styles.

What we are sharing with Secret Thirteen readers is an edited version of what happened that night.

We are very pleased to guest a great name of the underground Techno scene this week. An artist equally comfortable playing as a DJ or as a live act. Hailing from Madrid, but already toured all over Europe, here is MILA STEINER! A dedicated and passionate artist, who has shared the stage with some of the big names in the scene already, she supplied us with an amazing set, which we cant’s stop playing over and over again. In love with electronic music from an early age, Mila Steiner acquired a special taste for the harder and acidic tracks in the 90s. At the beginning of her adolescence, she began to take an interest in music production using trackers and magnetic tapes, as well as the use of concrete music techniques to manipulate and treat sound in her first works.

Later she gets into the underground scene and learns the art of mixing. She begins her residency in a series of techno events where she shares the stage with artists such as Oscar Mulero or Alexander Kowalski among others.

Two years later, she became part of the Dampfhammer Imperium collective. On her tours around Europe she also shares the stage with artists such as the legendary Dj Rush, ANGY KORE, David Temessi, Sebastian Groth, Brian Sanhaji and others.

Some of the labels that release her tracks are Eclectic Limited, Naughty Pills or Sub Records.

As a technology and retro-computer lover, Mila currently uses modular synthesizers and any kind of hardware as well as experimenting with old computers such as the famous Atari ST or Amstrad CPC to produce her music.

Her tracks are characterized by a marked rhythm and industrial cut, dense and heavy basslines with raw and acid sounds.

In Hour 2 it's François X, a key protagonist within Paris’ underground scene for nearly a decade, François X has firmly cemented himself as one of France’s finest exports within the realms of House and Techno. Since making his production debut in 2009, the Parisian has gone on to establish his inimitable blend of genre bridging Techno, most notably via Dj Deep’s renowned Deeply Rooted imprint as well as his own label DEMENT3D. With his versatility fuelled by a rich knowledge and understanding of his musical heritage, his rapid rise has seen the DJ establish himself as a key resident at Concrete Paris, not to mention regular appearances at the likes of Berghain (Berlin), fabric (London) and Robert Johnson (Frankfurt). His debut album 'Irregular Passion' came out at the end of last year and he told us;
"The idea behind the mix wasn't very clear at the beginning. Experimental? Danceable? Trippy?… So I decided to let loose and selects tracks I was enjoying at that moment to create a patchwork of vibes. I'm known for playing straight 4/4 techno but around a year or so ago I began to reinvent myself slightly by playing tracks I wouldn't usually include in my in sets. Taking more risks. Surprising both my audience and, first and foremost, myself. Music is the answer!" - François X
