San Ignacio is an Argentinian artist from the Tigre delta, with creative roots that lie in DJing & producing experimental-noise music since he was 19. He also happens to be a juggler of harmonies, music mixologist and percussion poet who’s put together the next edition in this podcast series, brought to you by your glocal Urban Cosmonaut Soundscapeship.

Fresh off his success with Doomtree’s No Kings album, super producer Lazerbeak has announced a new solo project: LAVA BANGERS, due on January 24th. His contributions to No Kings helped earn the album a pile of accolades from critics across the country, including Pitchfork, CMJ (“great hip-hop”), The Onion (A-), and The Star Tribune (Twin Cities album of the year).
LAVA BANGERS is a seamless mix of 20 unreleased Beak instrumental tracks, with transitions, blends, and scratches by DJ Plain Ole Bill. Where many hip hop instrumental albums lean toward the brooding melancholy of strings, down-tempo drums, and slow builds—or simplistic 4-bar loops—Lazerbeak breaks from the pack to create a hard-hitting collection of head-nodders with victorious horn-lines, layered melodies, and monstrous percussion. The tracks are brief and full, songs in their own right with swift dynamic changes and purposeful, deliberate structures. Start to finish, LAVA BANGERS is a composition in motion, never affording listeners the opportunity for boredom or fatigue. One of Lazerbeak’s great strengths may be his flawless timing, his ability to anticipate the exact moment the listener is primed for a change: a dramatic drop, a new, rising melody, an onslaught of fresh drums. In the end, LAVA BANGERS has a closer cousin in Ratatat than in DJ Shadow.
LAVA BANGERS began in Beak’s basement studio as a collection of 150 beats, all created and stored in his MPC. Plain Ole Bill (live DJ for P.O.S and Brother Ali, and contributor to Atmosphere’s Strictly Leakage and Wugazi’s 13 Chambers) helped to transform the project into a curated collection of Beak’s best work, more polished and more dynamic than the standard beat tape. An internationally touring DJ with more than ten years in the game, Bill’s ear and technical ability (particularly for sequence and transitions) create a higher standard for the project, and it shows. LAVA BANGERS sounds like the work of young veterans, whose talents and enthusiasm are backed and carried by their mastery of craft.
Lazerbeak will perform a solo set on every night of Doomtree’s No Kings Tour, beginning January 2012 and hitting more than 40 cities in the United States and Canada.

Today Lazerbeak announced Luther, his first solo full-length offering since 2012’s breakout release Lava Bangers, to be released on Doomtree Records this February 15th.

Armed with an endless vault of rap beats and an extensive musical catalog spanning over two decades, the Minneapolis producer’s classic sound has generally taken on an epic, hard-hitting, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach - inspired largely by production crews like Atlanta’s Dungeon Family and New York’s Bomb Squad. He’s collaborated with everyone from reigning rap queen Lizzo, bluegrass heavyweights Trampled By Turtles, storied supergroup GAYNGS, East Coast indie-rockers Speedy Ortiz, and the Grammy-winning Minnesota Orchestra, all while continuing to build and create with life-long comrades from his own Doomtree artist collective like Dessa, P.O.S, and Shredders.

Much has changed in the seven years since Beak released Lava Bangers, and Luther’s drastic musical turn echoes the same life-changing experiences Beak has encountered in that timeframe. Now 36 and a father of three, with a day job that includes CEO of Doomtree Records and manager of numerous high-profile acts such Doomtree, POLICA, and Shredders, Beak set out to create a project that would reflect the ever-morphing landscape that he’s embraced in his 30’s. Whereas Lava Bangers’ 20 short, high-energy heat rocks relied heavily on monstrous drums, punishing bass, and gnarly horn stabs - sounding at times more like the fury of Run The Jewels or the Just Blaze-helmed Rocafella Records era - Luther finds Beak stripping every sound back to its individual core. Seven meticulously slow-building and expansive instrumental meditations that ebb and flow with a newfound patience and restraint rarely seen from the producer.

The album title - a simultaneous tip of the hat to Beak’s all-time favorite singer, Luther Vandross, as well as his four-year-old son lovingly given the same name - is a reflection of this boiled-down, reflective approach. Inspired largely by his new life as a family man and a recent deep dive into all things mindfulness, self wellness, and gratitude, Luther thrives on ambient atmospherics, gentle melodies, and carefully-crafted percussion to create its own pulsing sonic universe. Every musical element is allowed the time and space to breathe and grow into a full-fledged composition, and the lack of vocals allows Beak to explore a much richer musical sound bed, giving each instrument its own moment in a constantly revolving spotlight. By exploring this quieter space, Lazerbeak has completed the long trek from beat-maker to producer, and Luther represents a newfound peace and balance in a rapidly changing world.
