Climate Change Meets Musical Theatre - The DAS Behind The Scenes Podcast!

For the last 11 weeks, the DAS Tuesday Seniors (Doorstep Arts Studio Courses) have been working on a project, where 15 of their young people explored and learnt more about climate change through a subject they know and love- Musical Theatre! Polly at Doorstep and Evelyn O’Malley from The University of Exeter led on this project, and with help from Doorstep Associate Artist Amy Mellows, the young people at DAS have created 2 podcasts about this experience.

This first podcast gives an insight into their rehearsal and performance process,  with songs from their musicals and discussions with DAS about the climate emergency and what it means to them. Our young people also interviewed Dr Freya Garry from the MET office as part of their process and were featured on BBC Radio Devon with Jo Loosemore.

DAS Climate Change Meets Musical Theatre- Podcast 2

In 2023, Doorstep Youth Theatre began divising an original piece of site-specific theatre. In July, they welcomed in fellow Doorsteppers, Homes for Ukraine and their own family and friends across 1 dress rehearsal and 3 shows.  During the process, Amy Mellows worked with DYT to create this radio play so we can all to enjoy for along time to come!

This podcast was recorded during Jade Campbell's (Doorstep Arts Co-Director) trip to Antyx Community Arts in Calgary as part of the Imagined Futures project.

It's a conversation between Jade, Richard Campbell - Executive Director of Antyx Community Arts and 3 of his participatory Artist facilitators.

We explore our practice as participatory artists working specifically with young people.  We unpack our thoughts around the process of creating vs the end product, social justice as a theme for our work and if we see our work as facilitators as an art in its own right.

Doorstep Youth Theatre’s first podcast explores the heritage of protest and rebellion in our home town, Paignton! Did you know that the centre of Paignton used to be cabbage fields? During our current creative and research process, we have created a movement to give a voice to Paignton’s lost cabbage farmers , building from our forgotten past to protest for our future.

This podcast offers a sneak peak behind the scenes of our Cabbage Rebellion, sharing our Paignton protest research, and some of the outcomes from our creative process such as new music and spoken word. Not forgetting some fun and games along the way to help get you through lockdown! You’ll leave learning something new about Paignton’s rebellious past, but there’s still much more to be discovered…

Behind the Scenes of The Cabbage Rebellion - Episode 1

Jam packed with discussions on the Black Lives Matter movement and its protests, racism and detachment in rural areas, education and what it means to be an anti-racist ally, our podcast today gives focus to the contemporary Black Lives Matter Movement and its place in South Devon.

Doorstep Youth Theatre’s second podcast in the ‘Behind the Scenes of the Cabbage Rebellion’ series, brings us forward in time from exploring protest and rebellion in Paignton’s heritage, to protest in the present day. Offering an insight into DYT’s conversations, and our work with Canadian Community arts company Antyx. Mia also speaks to very special guests from SDARA (South Devon Anti Racism Alliance) who organised the recent Black Lives Matter protest in Torquay, and Francois tells us about his experiences and the speech he made on the day. 

As young people from South Devon we share our research and bring these important conversations into the forefront.  You’ll leave learning something new about South Devon’s role in present day protest, rebellion and racism, but there’s still much more to be learned and discovered…

Doorstep Arts' Saturday Seniors group have been generating some exciting and creative radio content inspired by Doorstep Youth Theatre’s Cabbage Rebellion project (that in part explores the heritage of protest and rebellion in Paignton, and the Cabbage fields and farmers of Paignton that are lost in its history). Hosted by Oscar, this short podcast includes their discussions on protest, and short radio dramas, music and poetry, that were all written and recorded by our young people!
