This session was definitely a pre-party to our Soulection 3 Year Celebration! We had a packed house at Kbeach with plenty of good vibes flowing. In fact it was Joe's first time meeting Lakim in person after all these years. This is Lakim's first time out in L.A. so we wanted to make sure Lakim was welcomed properly. We had him drop a quick preview set on the radio show and talk about his forthcoming album "This Is Her" a little. We also had Andres drop a quick set to switch up the vibes, After Andres, we had Sunni Colòn & J-Louis both come on and preview some remixes that we've been putting together. So much talent in one room. Big ups to Marvel Alexander and shouts to everyone who came out to our 3 year Anniversary party. It was massive and hectic at the same time. Stay tuned for our announcement to our new Soulection monthly.

Marques Wyatt is an ambassador of house music for the West Coast and a cornerstone of electronic music in Los Angeles since the 80’s. His Om Records classic ‘For Those Who Like to Get Down’ (originally released in 2002) was loved the world over and championed in London by Ben Watt and Jay Hannan (at their legendary Lazy Dog nights), in NYC by Little Louie Vega and Kenny Dope (at the infamous Masters at Work), in Chicago by the likes of Frankie Knuckles and Derrick Carter and of course in San Francisco by the likes of Mark Farina, Miguel Migs and Kaskade.

Now, 13 years later Marques continues to spread his brand of aural love in Los Angeles, and through touring the width and breadth of the United States and other continents. He globe trots everywhere from Los Angeles to New York, Shanghai to Barcelona, and Tel Aviv to Dubai with the mission to bring musical unity, love and celebration of life to all souls in his pathway.

Joining him on the remix duties are future stars themselves; Soul Clap and Click Click.  The Soul Clap Remix injects the original vocal sample with an extra dose of funk laced booty shaking deep house. The flip Acid Smoothout mix takes the groove into even deeper and heavier territory. Not to be outdone, Click Click builds on the vocal loop into a funky deep house groove that’s perfect for ripping up dance floors. Finishing out the package is the original Deep Sunday Retro Vibe Mix that still sounds great 13 years since people originally got down to it.

Also known for his popular ‘Music For Listening’ mix series he turns in a Solid Steel mix that follows in the same vein, a laid-back selection with music from Sufjan Stevens, Matthew Halsall, Four Tet, Linda Perhacs and Aphex Twin.

This track is taken from upcoming full length "Dead In A Ditch" by rarely-seen Michigan act Billowing. Regularly a duo of Scott DeRoche on prepared guitar and Fred Thomas on a spectrum of electronics and tape delays, this album was edited from a particularly inspired session where the band extended to include saxophonist Daniel Bennett, drummer Shigeto and bassist Tim Flood. The collective improvisations took on a tone of mostly bleak, wintery despair that lifted only slightly for the still-dour groove of this tune.

Having given us one of the most successful album releases in the Wah Wah catalogue with their eponymous debut over 18 months ago now, Bristol siblings in jazz the Colman Brothers have finally succumbed to the remix project we’ve all been waiting for, and what a project it is!

The brothers’ sophisticated style and penchant for 60s latin influenced jazz by the likes of Horace Silver and Francy Bolland has been brought right up-to-date by some of the most heavyweight producers around, and a few new names to watch. 

Up and coming beat-maker from Caracas, Venezula, Jimmy Flamante kicks things off in a low slung style akin to producer of the moment Tall Black Guy, who also features with his typically laid back re-working of one of the original album’s highlights. Elsewhere, latin specialist Sunlightsquare drops a 4/4 version of “Some Other Wonder” that’s aimed strictly at the dance floor, as does the mysterious Bman, and newcomers Skinshape impress with a dubbed out take of  the very cheeky “Momo”.

Look out for Herma Puma’s re-imagination of “The Chief”, taking it directly back to its B-Movie roots, as well as the popular interpretation by our very own Part-Time Heroes. And don’t forget label mate/boss Scrimshire who also weighs in with a sultry remix of “She Who Dares” and beat heads Frameworks, whose version of “El Nino” will keep lovers of both hip hop and jazz happy in equal measure.

Add to that sublime mixes from UK legends Easy Access Orchestra and The Herbaliser, NYC’s Greenwood Rhythm Coalition, Hamburg’s Renegades Of Jazz and of course, Bristol’s very own Colman Brothers themselves, and you’ve got an international selection of the highest order!
