Lyrically, the track explores existential questions regarding freedom: feeling free vs being free. Instrumentally, it was made using Ableton and is a genre blend; influenced by indie electronic, synthwave, trap, electro house, metal, and cinematic, in particular the "Us" film score. It carries a dark and violent vibe juxtaposed against moments of beauty and serenity. The contrast in beauty vs violence is influenced by the metal band, Ghost.

I’ve always loved this Beatles song. The birth of this track came after I’d spent some time searching YouTube for an electronic, banging cover of “Fool on the Hill,” I just thought it would be cool. And I couldn’t find anything I liked, so my wife suggested I just make a version.

In covering it, I had a lot of fun playing with sounds, using my Ableton “studio” as an instrument. I was thinking a lot about the ways the Beatles were pioneers in utilizing the studio itself as an instrument, becoming more experimental with their productions and recording and mixing techniques. 

 I also got really into the emotional vulnerability of the fool character. Paul emphasized the wisdom of the fool, and I wanted to explore the ways in which that wisdom lives in all of us. Instead of being a guru, I wanted the fool to be an everyman and to explore the deep hearts and intuitions of the every-day person when he or she takes a step back from society and watches the world go round, because it’s something that can often be so hard for any of us when we’re caught up in the hustle and grind of living and surviving. 

In a lot of ways, the covid crisis introduced a brief period of time when many people were forced to take a step back from their lives and self-quarantine. It’s always interesting to see the various ways people have reacted and grown through that time. I know for me, I definitely felt like it put me in this seat of the observer both of the world, and also myself and the life that I’d been living every day up to that point. 

These experiences definitely influenced the second half of the production on “Fool on the Hill.” To me it really embodied a lot of these experiences and the wonder and struggle that goes along with them.
