Estiban - Come To Me

"Here am I your special island, come to meeee, come to meeee". Some records have a strange destiny emerging once in a while to sink again in the unending ocean of time... Bali Ha'i is the name of a mystical island somewhere in the Pacific, visible on the horizon but not reachable. Initially, the song appears in the Broadway musical South Pacific (1949) which was made into a blockbuster film in 1958. Then "Bali Ha'i" was covered by Disconnection in 1982 and released on the mighty Y Records. In the musical, the matriarch of Bali Ha’i, Bloody Mary, conducts a lot of business with the troops, and sings her mysterious song "Bali Ha’i" to the Lieutenant Joseph Cable after he arrives, because she wants to entice him to visit her island. In 2016 Unfamous Glasgow imprint Optimo Music reissues this cult and seducing "mutant" disco tune in the original configuration : Radio Mix, US Discomix and UK Discomix versions alongside the faux exotica delight “Aaaah”. The vinyl is out on June 3rd, but already "in your heart, you'll hear it call you: Come away...Come awayyy"

In the pivotal period before the end of Apartheid, the fluff of bubblegum was starting to boil over into what later became the tougher township-centric sounds of kwaito. Amidst this volatile and transitional climate a mysterious kid named Eddie Magwaza started making moves in the studio, creating music for a vibrant street dance style that was blowing up in SA, called pantsula. At the time, other groups were also starting to create faster and more instrumental dance music which suited this agile style of dancing, but on this album Magwaza managed to channel the cosmic chant of italo and the sweaty energy of early house music in a unique and peerless way that has captured the ears and feet of DJs and dancers around the world many years later.

Magwaza, who wasn't even 20 when he made this album, had the help of seasoned studio whizzes Lucky Matante & Jan Smit with programming, sequencing and engineering, and their studio mastery really takes flight on the dub version of the title cut which has made the album so desirable in the last few years. Sadly Magwaza was shot and killed shortly after the release of the album and it stands as the last testament to his brilliant vision.

Remastered and pressed on a loud 12" Mashisa is once again available to spread the pantsula spirit to dancing bodies everywhere. Artwork by Jessica Greene.

Following the reissue of Vox Populi!’s Aither album, Emotional Rescue further explores the more discerning, esoteric sounds of the French 80’s avant-garde scene in Écoute…

Visual artist, sound designer, musician, label founder and emotional tree consultant Ramuntcho Matta is a man of shifting, relentless talents.  Diagnosed with autism at a young age.   Therapy based on yoga and music set him on a path, leading to learn from the likes of composter Cuarteto Cedrón.  

Discovering avant-music at an early age, he moved to New York to study in the "Third Street School of Music", meeting John Cage and going on to work on projects with Laurie Anderson, Brion Gysin and Don Cherry.

His architectural concepts applied to composition were explored on his 3 solo LPs from the 1980s.  The middle of these, Écoute, is possibly his most cohesive, exploring the use of “extra-European musicians”, especially African and Brazilian percussion, jazz horn playing, as well as Uruguayan singer Elie Meideros.  

Mexico’s Cacau de Queiroz’s performance on saxophone and flute is stunning, former Gipsy Kings member, Jorge “Negrito” Trasante attributes much of the LP’s Brazilian percussive flavour, while Magma’s bassist Jannick Top brings gravitas, including performing a water claps duet alongside Matta on the exquisite O Clapo. 

As one piece, Écoute endlessly avoids standard musical formulas, seeking textures of far-flung elements; alchemy against a background of freedom to experiment that would be the theme throughout Matta’s career, whether setting up SSR records under the alias Michael Pope or in his more recent output, teaching methodology of doubt.

Originally released in 1980 ,Raja Zahr's "Drum Sequence" is a 'get crazy', experimental disco monster, utilizing Middle Eastern percussion and analog synthesisers, so mind boggling they would keep any dancefloor begging for more. And there is more. Two additional tracks of Lebanese percussion madness by Raja make this an essential triple banger previously known only to serious collectors with cash to burn. Meticulously remastered for club use and approved by Mr Zahr himself.
This crispy 12" is one for the freaks. So go on then...
