Trembling and easily the darkest track of the EP. Evocative and sexy at the same time. The insertion of down-tempo breaks make it a groovy anthem.

Back at our mammoth Stay True Scotland broadcast earlier this month, one track came real close to bringing The Caves' roof down during Nina Kraviz's powerhouse headline set. "I Wanna Go Bang" very nearly executed its titular statement – well, if the song was more about wrecking balls and less about...oh, never mind.

The vocals that stalk the track, so wholly devoid of humanity, rub up against razor-sharp claps and serious bounce in the subs. It's weighty warehouse techno of the highest order, set to devastate dark basements and big tents alike throughout the year. Simply put: Icelandic producer Bjarki has delivered a bomb.

September 2018 will see the launch of Butter Side Up Records with a 12” that embodies the considered club sound of the much loved Leeds and London party. 

It comes from fast rising Idle Hands and Northsouth artist Christian Jay with a remix from The Brane owner Youandewan and offers four cuts of slick electronic house music complete with artwork by Sophie Doulala. 

Butter Side Up is a now eight-year-old party that has carved out its own musical niche. Dealing in tasteful house and techno with a leaning towards breakbeats, garage and real deepness, the night is built on a solid core of residents, with guests like Craig Richards, Nicolas Lutz and Margaret Dygas also having played their intimate events. The label’s outlook will continue in this vein, with a focus on releasing three EPs a year from talented friends and close associates. 

Opener ‘Running’ is dance floor focussed house with nimble rubber drums and slick hits that make you move. Curious synth sounds and rich design make it a timeless track with an air of sci-fi trippiness. ‘Green’ hits a little harder, with drilling sub bass that pulls you in deep as a microcosm of icy hits, alien sounds and synth trails flesh out the futuristic groove. 

Flipside ‘Jupiter’ is a cerebral warm up tune with spacious pads circling round as kinetic little hits, whirs and bass stabs paint a colourful cosmic picture. It’s a micro-groove that really gets under your skin, and is backed up with a remix from Youandewan. A long-time friend of BSU who has made his mark in Berlin with in the know cuts on cult labels like Eclipser Chaser, Voyage and his own The Brane, his version of ‘Green’ is super silky, with lush pads soothing your soul as the muted bassline and bouncy drums set your feet to work.

This EP marks a typically tasteful first instalment from the Butter Side Up boys.

Young talentented producer, Cali Lanauze stands in for the next delivery on, Serialism’s sister label DX with ‘A beautiful lie ep’. Three originals from the Caribbean born artist, and two remixes coming from Oshana, and Topper. 

Opener ’You Can Repeat’, is a groovy and effective transcending sound, with trippy spoken words flashing in and out, accompanied by eery creaks seeping through the gaps of the rhythms.
’25 De Enero’ takes you on a dark journey, to be welcomed by a dreamy piano riff but maintaining its atmosphere before being brought back down to earth by a stern thud of the kick, that trained ears will appreciate. ‘A Beautiful Lie’ has a more swinging edge to it, as flickering mechanical, liquid like pads work their way around the body of the track. 
The first remix from the package comes from Oshana with her version of ‘You Can Repeat’ steering clear of the originals vibe, with an acid progression and psychedelic mysterious synths. As expected Topper brings his minimal sound forth in his remix of ’25 De Enero’ with the most laid back structure of all the tracks, all of the elements having space to breathe and work their magic on a bright afternoon. 

This is modern day minimal at its finest, and yet again another solid EP from the Serialism camp 🍁
