Natura Sonora is both an album of imagined journeys and a homage to the immensity, beauty and mystery of the natural world.

The album was created during the first Covid-19 lockdown from my 40sqm flat in a Parisian suburb, dreaming of the beauty of the outside world.

The concept was to use music as a tool to go on an imagined journey to some of the world’s most beautiful natural places - an escape from the same view from my window of a grey, urban environment during lockdown. I chose nine stunningly beautiful, strange and mysterious corners of the world I have always dreamt of visiting but never have. I immersed myself in these places, watching video, photographs and seeking out recordings of how they sound.

These recordings became the foundation for each track, from creaking ice to underwater mangroves, goats and birds to rain and rivers, each sound has its own story to tell. I would place the ‘found sound’ recording into Ableton, hook up my Digitone synth or some drum kits and start to explore and experiment alongside the sound. I also took a lot of inspiration from sound ecologists like Bernie Kraus’ work on the musicality of nature and how sound can be a measure of an ecosystem’s health.

Natura Sonora is an ode to the majesty of nature and its power to inspire, a reminder that despite our attempts to control it, we remain in awe of its power, its beauty and its mystery. It is also an ode to the imagination, to travelling without moving and how, despite the hardship, the pandemic also pushed our creative boundaries.

I couldn’t imagine a better artwork to accompany this album than this incredible piece by Tomás Sánchez, one of Cuba’s most important living artists. His stunningly detailed landscapes explore the beauty and loss of our natural world, depicting a utopic, untouched, dreamlike scene which no longer exists and often placing a lone figure meditating before a lush, wild, green backdrop.

His work presents a paradox of mourning for what we have destroyed alongside hope and a vision of what we are trying to save - a symbol of hope within chaos.

When someone breaks the pattern of generational trauma, it means they are actively interrupting the cycle of negative experiences and behaviors that have been passed down through generations within a family or community. This interruption can involve diferent kinds of healing methods and therapies, developing healthy coping mechanisms, and making conscious efforts to prevent the transmission of trauma to future generations. Breaking this cycle is essential for healing and fostering positive change within families and communities.

Can Also Be described as the cycle of our Karma, that can be understand consciously, accepted, and Manage.

there are many types of them and variations the principal ones are:

Sanchita Karma:

This refers to the accumulated karma from past actions that are yet to be experienced. It's like a reservoir of all deeds—good, bad, or neutral—that a person has performed in past lifetimes.

Prarabdha Karma:

Prarabdha karma is the portion of sanchita karma that is currently being experienced in the present lifetime. It's the destiny or fate that an individual is born into and must undergo in this life.

Kriyamana Karma (Agami Karma):

This type of karma refers to the actions performed in the present life, which will result in future consequences. It's the karma that one is currently creating through their thoughts, words, and deeds.


Vikarma:

Vikarma refers to actions that are against the natural order or righteousness. These actions generate negative karma and can lead to suffering or negative consequences.


Akarma:

Akarma, sometimes referred to as "non-action," is performing actions without attachment to their fruits or outcomes. It's the idea of acting selflessly, without expecting personal gain, and can lead to positive spiritual growth.

Karma Yoga:

Karma Yoga is the path of selfless service or action. It involves performing one's duties and responsibilities without attachment to the results, dedicating all actions to a higher purpose or the Divine.

Fanfara Electronica - Native [GHR001] Hybrid Rituals Vol.1

For this our sixth Botanas single series we have the pleasure to present two stunning original tracks and one beautiful edit from Canadian producer Oonga (who you might have spotted on our Mare Insularum compilation). Oonga is a DJ/producer from Montreal who works with Stonetree Records. 

Opener El Caracol is one of the most personal tracks the artist has ever made. It is based on a poem written by Eli´s (Oonga) dad and dedicated to him. It was written after the two of them had a really deep conversation about hidden pain and then months later his dad showed him the words, and he was extremely moved and so created this beautiful track. 

This inspiration came at the same time as Oonga's exposure to the neo-folkloric slow cumbia tech sound while travelling. He put the two together and this special Botanas was born. His dear friend Ana adapted the words into Spanish and sang the melodies (as well as doing the art). 

Oonga´s music captured our ears right away and these three tracks are the perfect soundtrack to the end of the summer for those of us in the norther hemisphere or to welcome the end of the Winter and brighter times for all those down south!

Gitkin’s music exists somewhere between primal, rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty bordertown where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign. 

After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to “explore tonalities I’d never messed with,” as he puts it. It was a release from “having to write lyrics or involve my voice,” he notes, and so the (mostly) instrumental sound of Gitkin came into being. 

Reviews of Gitkin’s first LP grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as “cinematic” and comparing it favorably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own. 

Gitkin’s first release, 2018’s well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his new full-length release Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadens his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlights the intense flavors found in each savory ingredient. 

Recorded at his home studio in New Orleans, Safe Passage showcases a new batch of immediately engaging, repeatedly satisfying cuts, ranging from surf exotica (“Cat Nip”) to raunchy roadhouse stompers (“Fools Gold” and “The Drive”) to dreamy vocal cuts “Foot Steps” and “Hold On” to the floating finale of “Safe Passage.” 

Gitkin’s production radiates character and warmth, leaning on soft-focus vintage mics, dubby spring reverbs and the quirks of an analog tape machine. Further enhancing the intimate vibe are distinguished guests like Carol C (of Si*Sé), who lends her striking voice to three tracks, including the strutting single “De La,” veteran Chauncey Yearwood (congas) and New Orleans local Clifton “Spug” Smith, who provides a sousaphone low-end on the cumbia-not-cumbia “Spug Life.” 

Safe Passage will be released by Wonderwheel on September 18th, 2020 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally.
