Digital Diamonds #PODCAST 21 by Anyer Quantum

Like the replicants in Blade Runner, the tracks on Ghoststorm are nostalgic for a past that never existed. Their emotions spring from artificially implanted memories. There is the theme song to an 80’ies anime TV-show that never existed, there is a spaghetti western where obscure characters shimmer on the edge of focus, there are elegant ballrooms filled with dancing dust and the contours of wuxia fights choreographed in the fluttery waves of VHS tracking.

The music is created from thousands of samples from all of musical history, shaped through the deep dreams of artificial networks – the sounds are remade by machine understanding. The result is a sonic maelstrom of cultural fragments, swirling forever in an Escher-like labyrinth on the verge of recognition: “…but isn’t that? …“.

Ghoststorm is the third and final release in Ugress’ dark future trilogy of releases. It is dystopian and cinematic music with a melancholic edge, echoing a subconscious dawning: We live our lives in apps, devices and social media. We share only our edited memories, a filtered life that never happened, and aspire to exist in this reality of manicured stories.

Living through screens, we are ghosting ourselves. We become replicants.

All These Worlds Are Echoes

If you go down in the woods today... you'd better go in disguise. 

A dark forest remake of a surreal, uncanny children's tune, originally composed by John Walter Bretton in 1907, with text added by Jimmy Kennedy in 1932. Using digital sonic forensic tools, vintage vinyl recordings are split into individual voices and elements, the song then recomposed, shifting the melody and harmonic structure to gloomy minor keys. Recombining the vintage elements in a dramatic production, spiced up with monumental beats and creepy sound design, providing a rather delightfully bizarre Teddy Bear trip.

Before Ugress, in the 90ies I made music with trackers as the demoscene artist Gnosis. Some of that was released as music disks, some of it has NEVER been released... until now. As part of the 20th anniversary of Ugress, and 30th anniversary as an artist, I've released all five musicdisks, spanning the era of 1993 to 1998.

A downtempo collab between Ugress and Nebular Spool, the first single from upcoming full Nebular Spool album, arriving on May 8th 2020. 

The track is a collaboration between Ugress and Nebular Spool (between me and me). I decided to not decide which artist to release it as, since it's a bit lighter, easier and decidedly beatsier than the previously gloomy Nebular Spool material. But it is also quite nostalgic and distant. So it can be both of me.
