This kind of behavior is typically the case of most guilty consciences in reading the words of people like me, people who fell as tributaries to their canal of historical destruction and revision. I don’t have a lot to say these days. I don’t want people to listen to me and then tell me that I said something closer resembling their own feelings about what I should feel, who I should be associated with, what person I am allowed to be. Over and over I learn that trust is based in time. It’s not something that exists or doesn’t. It’s just a series of behaviors, and the way we measure it is how far into the past we are willing to look to see how far into the future. Trust is all of time compressing into the present moment, therefore reflecting more accurately what reality is, the forever present.
These days, I trust everyone except me. I’m the most dangerous person in the room to myself, the invisible monster reaching around my shoulders to hold my heart still.
