Next up in the Fast Forward Audio Series, we present: Paàl

Paàl is one of Voitax’s founders, an avid vinyl collector and tireless DJ. Those who have experienced his sets will know his uncanny ability to adapt and move with the crowd. This is an artist who is comfortable drawing out long transitions between deeper movements, as he is rapidly cutting between high-energy, dancefloor bombs. At peak moments, tracks are mixed within minutes and somehow, before you know it, a whole variety of rhythmic electronics has been transformed into drum machine workouts, while not limiting himself to any genre. This is his relentless sound: wild and boundless – one that is also showcased with flair in his studio productions.

Following on from a string of remixes and V/A appearances, his debut EP, ‘Fitz Roy’ was released on Voitax in 2018 – featuring complex sound design, metallic broken beats and frenzied, peak-time dancefloor tracks. The EP was widely supported globally.

Two years later, comes his second solo six-track EP, 'Soothing Songs For A Cultured Affair' on Midnight Shift Records. Awashed with a palate of dark and broken sounds, yet with touches of warmth and humor, it burrows deep into the mind of the artist. Paàl’s penchant for thunderous, rumbling low ends sets the precedent for the EP, with glimpses of the artist’s knack for melodies and harmonies.

As you could guess from his ever-growing analog studio setup, Paàl’s has an undying passion for hardware – drum machines, synths and pedals tracked through a mixing desk, raw and unedited. Imperfections intrinsic to this process are essential to him – warm, organic and, at times, lo-fi and grainy.
His first DJ gigs were at DIY raves held in air hangars and derelict structures left over from the fallout of the DDR. Having quickly garnered a name for himself, and fuelled by a relentless drive, Paàl and his friends Christoph, Martin, and Marcus turned their attention towards setting up a record label they called Voitax Records – and the rest, as they say, is history. The label has since become synonymous with off-kilter electronics, attested by its global support.

Establishing himself as a meticulous selector, Paàl eclectic vinyl-only DJ sets span multiple tempos and genres and have seen him touring Asia, South America and Europe, including a stint in the seminal Berlin institution, Berghain. Expect to hear more from this talent.

Fast Forward Audio Series #68: Paàl

Kicking off the 4-track EP is the sounds of the title-track, ''Make A Wish''. Nimble and quick-footed, it moves at a gregarious pace that soon picks up steam thanks to its effervescent kicks and its humming bassline. It's quality stuff, and the overriding feeling of quality is soon matched by the stripped-back, moody strands of ''Then It Happened''. This time around, the luscious bongo percussion proves an ominous foil for the spoken-word vocals, resulting in a track that's as mysterious as it is moody. 

''Jazz'' eases in the second half of the package, whereby we're again introduced to the producer's more gentle and intricate side. Packed with subtle nuances and celestial vibes from start to finish, the music is wonderfully paired with a sporadic urban drawl that lends it an extra dimension. Lastly, ''About Mary'' bumps, grinds and glides with a convincing charm, as it entices the listener with its many muffled facets and a penchant for the unpredictable.

In just a few years, Josh Butler has firmly established himself as one of house music's most revered talents. 2016 saw the launch of his label Origins, with Josh welcoming the likes of Marshall Jefferson, Todd Terry, Robert Owens and Santé to the imprint since, scoring his second Beatport #1 through his and Bontan’s stand out ‘Call You Back’ in early 2017. Add to the equation EPs on Kaoz Theory, Rejected and Defected, collaborations with Kerri Chandler and Darius Syrossian, and remixes for industry heavyweights Carl Cox and Joris Voorn, and it’s clear to see that Josh Butler is only just getting started. No wonder that Nick Curly and Gorge are very proud about his debut EP on their 8bit Records imprint.

Germany’s Rough Recordings delivers a double 12’’ compilation this June/July, entitled Rough Cutz #Four and featuring music from Ruff Stuff, Kevin Over, Tilman, label-head Tobi Danton and more.
Rough Recordings and it’s Rough Limited sub-label was launched by Tobias Hölzel aka Tobi Danton and Daniel Napolitano in 2014 out of Stuttgart, Germany and over the years has release its contemporary twist on classic house sounds from the likes of Ruff Stuff, Black Loops, Diego Krause, Kevin Over and more.
Here the label welcomes several of the aforementioned back for the fourth instalment of its Rough Cutz series. Across the package Tobi Danton, Frag Maddin and Tilman deliver raw deep house cuts employing the classic tropes of swinging rhythm’s, airy chord sequences and hazy vocals.
Ruff Stuff’s ‘Metro Alchemy’ lays down a more synth-led feel via choppy bass and fluttering arpeggios while Dub Striker’s ‘Blurred Vision’ opens the release on a cinematic tip. Further contributions come from Annéke Laurent, who embraces a more stripped-back textureal aesthetic as well as music from Kevin Over and dotSTRIPE who lean further towards a more bumpy House feel.
