This is a tune I wrote after finishing the amazing game Metal Gear Solid on PS1. It's the last video game I've ever completed. Needless to say the song has lived on as a memorial to my lack of interest in putting in that many hours on something besides music. It also sums up the time/feel relationship I have with my brother.

Crop Circles was recorded live on December 10th, 2018 and showcases five members of Red 5. This composition provides a clear picture of my ensemble writing style. A solo bass intro with ensemble backgrounds precedes the melody. Trumpet (Jake Baldwin), trombone (JC Sanford), and guitar (Thomas Nordlund) solos have been edited down for time and JT Bates plays a drum solo over the bridge figure to end.

I Think We All Feel is a statement on the human condition and the fact that we do ALL feel. Pain, anger, love, hope, and hate. As a species, we need to realize that our best way to a better understanding is through empathy and love for one another. Tom Nordlund provides beautiful guitar work and JT Bates takes us to a very wonderful space. This simple song shows how Red 5 operates in an organic and empathetic way. Please note that this live recording has some digital interference and I've dropped the volume in places to preserve this take.

I Think We All Feel (edit)

Arz Al Atlas is inspired by the documentary 'Hashish' which explores life in a small village in Morroco and how the entire village culture revolves around the production of this substance. Musically it explores the juxtaposition of triplets vs. 16th notes as demonstrated by a short musical example included in the film. The melody is through-composed and evolves from a slow burn to a huge crescendo. Brass and woodwind duets allow the band to explore collective improvisation and the interaction between the rhythm section and soloists.

Chris Bates is a bassist and composer from Minneapolis, MN. His new trio album 'Good Vibes' will be released April 15th. Chris' quintet Red 5 released the album 'New Hope' in the fall of 2012.
