DS Soundbaths

When I stumbled into Camp Conception's dance party during the haze of Burning Man 2012, I was completely blown away.  I was 25, I still had more than two brain cells, and it was my first time on the playa. I'd never been to a rave, and my idea of a gay dance party was remixes of top 40 songs at neighborhood gay bars.

Meeting @djSpaceOtter there was one of many first times for me at Burning Man. Another first was the music — I'd never heard anything like it before. When I looked up at the DJ booth, pupils dilated, I thought to myself, “This is it.  This is what I’ve been searching for.”


This mix based on an unrecorded live closing set in January 2020 from “Dawn - A Blacklight Sunrise,” a Camp Conception Burning Man fundraiser at the Monkey Loft, Seattle.

Once upon a time, I slid a giant slide and found myself in the gaping hole of a giant mechanical sheep, lit properly with black and neon lighting. Its stomach was lined with pink faux fur and its visceral organs were made of disco balls held together by electric nylon. It was there that I met DJ Beya. @bbellayuto

Beya is a cofounder of one of San Francisco's most notable queer nightlife organizations, appropriately named @polyglamorous-club. Their parties (which are always ripe with incredible talent from San Francisco and beyond) include Sneaks, held on Dore weekend, and New Breed, held on Folsom weekend. Here comes a very special recording from the Afterglow tent at Comfort & Joy. Following a naked bike ride was an anything goes party with CBass (@cbasstx) and @Mouthfeel. Despite the challenges of DJing in the middle of a tent off in the middle of a desert, these two laid down a fierce set.
Imagine 200 bodies colliding into each other for some serious lust in the dust.

Raised in our native Austin, Texas but made a break for New York when he was 18, we’ve always had a kinship with Ms. Automagic. He has become one of the most revered DJs in New York as part of the Carry Nation but is a fierce DJ and producer in his own right.  Over the next hour he keeps the pacing slow but the energy level high.  Lather yourself in this lusty mix of heart quicking synths and stuttering percussion to prepare yourself for whatever may come your way.

To kick off the Double Scorpio Sound Bath series is our sister from the south, @Bouffant-Bouffant. 
She brings the right mix of seduction and party starters to kick off our journey into the night.  In his own words "I pulled some classics for this, some slithery percussion, some gay cruisy icons, some yearning for women vocals to open up the gender for a new age of bathhouse... all our friends smiling with raging hard ons in white towels, our trans-femme girls titties out, and non-gendered pals twirling for the gods, our masc bros making the moves around every corner. DS Sound Baths- Bouffant Bouffant

CarrieOnDisco provides us with a proper Sleaze mix to bring us into the morning hours. Carrie is a beloved DJ hailing from England but has been turning the party in San Francisco (and around the country) for years. For the uninitiated, Sleaze or “morning music” is a style of DJing  perfected in New York, SF, and Fire Island that features slower, lilting tunes with romantic lyrics that act as an encore to a night of nonstop dancing. Carrie crafts a nearly four hour masterclass in the slower side of disco, soul, and psychedelia that eases us from night into day. Whether this music is the perfect come down before bed or the soundtrack for a new lover you brought home for Sunday service, Carrie delivers a powerhouse finale to our night at the Sound Baths.

You know that old saying: A butthole is like a studio apartment, a pussy is like a topiary-garden maze. Oh, you aren’t familiar with it?  Well, it's an apt descriptor for the fourth mix in our series where DJ Lisa Frank guides us into the deepest recesses of the DS Sound Baths.  This mix is filled with plot twists and sharp left turns and an unexpected musique concréte element that will have your towels falling off.  Whatever position you’re in now, you’re going to be flipped upside down five minutes later.  Don’t try to guess the next move, just surrender.

DS Soundbaths Lisa Frank

Prepare yourself for something special with an original composition created by coatshek. A hypnotic, continuous music piece created just for the Sound Baths, @coatshek aka Sheki, layers synths, drum machines, and live guitar playing to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Once upon a time (the 1970s) bathhouses were more than just a place to hook up. Some had discos, full gyms, restaurants, the works. As some of you may know, Bette Midler got her start in the cabaret room at the Continental Baths with Barry Manilow playing piano for her. Sheki, quite a sturdy and hirsute block of man, may not be considered the natural successor to the Divine Ms. M, but he certainly brings a new dimension to the bathhouse with this live set that is engineered to take you into sensory overload.

DS SoundBaths - Coatshek

Hailing from the Windy City, meet Harry Cross –  
Resident DJ at Steamworks Chicago, definitely the reigning Queen of Slings. Creator of the legendary Witch Finger party, Harry's resume is extensive and impressive.

In this epic bathhouse series finale, Harry drops a mix that captures the vibe of the first half of a legendary 6-hour set, recorded live at Steamworks Bath House in Chicago. The DJ booth overlooks the locker room and the steam room entrance, so it's usually chill – but not on this night. Shows upon shows were breaking out everywhere, love was in the air, and exchanges of all kinds were made.

This mix has been budussy tested and pillow biter approved. Buckle up, grab on to your towel, and enjoy the ride.

This mix comes courtesy of one of our resident DJs and regular collaborators, @DylanReece. Dylan is a Texas native who co-produces our raves and designs our bottle packaging. Most importantly though, he is a super fierce DJ that has been slaying Austin for years and recently venues around the country.

For this mix Mr. Reece gives you Stevie Nicks on acid... house. DSMIX_03  Father Figure - Huff Um if You Got Um Mix

This mix comes from our good friend @Orographic - everyone’s favorite Portland based forest ranger turned DJ. With this sprawling two and a half hour mix he explores wild landscapes of dub, funk, house and ambient that stretch to the horizon. The last time we were able to throw a party, Orographic played to five hundred people packed into a CrossFit gym turned freak out zone and we miss that moment more than ever. This mix is helping us dream of brighter days.

@ChorizoFunk’s The Other Brown Meat mix is a collection of smoke signals yearning for carnal connection. We’re all locked up in our bedrooms and this mix is about the new ways we can explore our moments within those walls.  Chorizo Funk is a native Texan and was recently named best DJ at the Austin Music Awards. Typically known for rowdy sets that bounce between hip-hop, reggaeton, and boogie, he has spent the last year exploring the seedier side of house. His omnivorous tastes are represented throughout.

DSMIX_13  MarceauxMarceaux's 4AM Kai Kai

When I first met San Fransisco queen and L.A. legend @djSindri, he was in full face and wearing a clown gown. Six years later, not much has changed (just kidding, he’s a hot bear now). Sindri’s main gig is being an internationally-recognized celebrity night school teacher, where he specializes in teaching queers how to speak Italo. If you missed class, then this mix is the perfect crash course. Sindri's syllabus is just what you need to prepare for your first summer rave.

We first heard about Tennessee-born, Atlanta-based artist @Nikki-Nair from our gals over at Muy Muy Limited and on a Sauna Memphis livestream. Since then, it has been a constant gag. As in can’t come up for air, face-is-turning-blue, fully gagged gag. He has been on fire in the last year, dropping a string of stand-out releases on Barely Legal’s Pretty Weird label, Claude VonStroke’s Dirtybird, Muy Muy Limited and Scuffed, among many others. Luckily for us, his mixing skills are as good and varied as his productions, and he has turned in almost 2 hours of chunky-chic sunshine rhythms that hit that special spot, just in time for Spring.
