Hymn:  St. Catherine of Siena (v. Larry Long)

Today's sound file is "Jesus, Lead the Way." The German text for this hymn is made up of selected stanzas of two hymns by the German Pietist, Zinzendorf. Both were originally published in 1725. Eventually the four stanzas became published together in Christian Gregor's "Gesangbuch zum Gebrauch der evangelischen Bruedergemeinden" in 1778. The translation "Jesus, Lead the Way" was made by Arthur Farlander, and appeared in "The Hymnal 1940."

The tune, "Rochelle" was composed by Adam Drese (1620-1701). Richard Proulx made the SATB arrangement of the hymn for choir, organ, and brass, which was published by GIA Publications in 1972.

The Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's in the Loop recorded it on the audio cassette "Music for Easter," which was published by The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN (www.litpress.org) in 1990. The Rienzi Brass, directed by Mr. Gregory Fudala, appear on this recording.

Today's sound file is a motet which uses text from the First Reading (Revelation 21: 1-5a) from the Office of Readings for Wednesday in the Fifth Week of Easter. The composer is Thomas Crequillon (c.1505-1557), a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance who wrote over 100 motets. The Schola Cantourm of St. Peter's in the Loop recorded this on the cd, "Music for Easter II," which was published in 1996 by The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN (www.litpress.org). If anyone is looking for the score, I have it in pdf form....to the best of my knowledge, it is not publsihed in a performing edition today.

Today is the 39th day of Pascha, called in Byzantine terminology the "Leave-taking of Pascha." On this day, the liturgical services of Pascha are sung again, and all of the Paschal hymns are sung for one last time this year.

Here is the hymn to the Theotokos which takes the place of "Dostojno jest'" during the forty days between Pascha and Ascension. It is in two parts: "The Angel exclaimed" and "Shine in splendor." These are the beginning of the Ninth Ode of Paschal Matins, sung in Carpatho-Rusyn prostopinije in English and harmonized by JMT.  This was recorded by the Ambrose-Romanos Singers of Pittsburgh.
