Releasing a compilation is not an easy task. Releasing a compilation series is an even harder one. Reaching the 10th volume of a compilation series is an extremely valuable accomplishment! And that’s exactly what we have here: The 10th episode of the “Cross Vault” VA series, coming soon on the Berlin-based label Buttress Records. Doing the honours, four rising and promising artists scattered throughout our little crazy and doomed world, unrelated, distant, but not disconnected: Alexey Union (Russia), Keith Holland (Brazil), Lerr (Montenegro), and Tayga (Italy), independently of their backgrounds and soundscapes, share a strong passion for high-quality underground electronic music – and that was exactly what they brought to the party.

The track we selected to review/premiere comes all the way from South America: From São Paulo, Brazil, to be more precise. Keith Holland, before signing his first release, has done a proper homework by learning and grasping the gist of music production for two years. The result is a fresh take on what he has been listening to during his fifteen-year career as a DJ.

For Buttress, he brought to evidence his signature sonority and cooked something very similar to his debut track on Innervisions’ “Secret Weapons Part 14.1”: Raw and distorted synth layers paired with beautifully arpeggiated leads and accompanied by groovy percussive elements. An infallible recipe that tends to catapult the career of the Paulistano artist. 

And for the Brazilian friends who happen to bump into this review, an important message: FUCK BOLSONARO!

Established house talent Harry Romero makes a standout debut on Rebellion with the ​Afro Horn​ EP, an impressive two track release made specifically for the label.

“I​ t’s always a great experience when you set your sights on a certain sound and outcome when you’re in the studio. ‘Afro Horn’ and ‘R.W.P.’ were created for Damian Lazarus. I’m glad he saw the vision and signed them to his Rebellion imprint as no other label could have done them justice! ‘Afro Horn’ is a straight up deep tribal experience framed around an African flute solo. I wanted to create a sort of beauty and the beast track with this.‘RWP’ is a bit more musically sophisticated with its moving keyboard parts and a real spaced out arrangement which gives it so much room to breath.”​ ​Harry Romero​.

Afro Horn​ starts proceedings in a tribal fashion. A well-rounded kick merges with resonant percussion, that takes the form of a rattlesnake’s tail, providing the track with an enigmatic, Saharan-like quality. ​R.W.P​ rounds off the release. Keyboard chimes fuse with a gentle up-and-down bassline, as ethereal chords are layered underneath to form an emotive dance-floor number.

A regular on the electronic music scene, ​Harry Romero​’s talent for adapting styles shows no signs of slowing down. Traversing the various incarnations of house music with ease, the US native has produced multiple EPs for Josh Wink’s Ovum Recordings as well as Yousef’s Circus Recordings; whilst his tougher, gritty productions have found a home on Tronic Music in the past. With an upcoming Essential Mix, Harry Romero is really beginning to cement his reputation as an esteemed and respected artist in the electronic music sphere.

Exclusive Ccismō 'Octubre (Aera Remix)'

Internationally oriented and Berlin based label Sol Eterno's latest signing comes from Mexican artist duo Carla and César Mendoza, better known under their alias Ccismō, who come in with two original tracks, 'Laso' and 'Octubre' for their first installment on the label, while 'Octubre' is provided with a remix by Aera. Known and worshipped for his releases on renowned labels such as Permanent Vacation, Maeve or Innervisions, the Northern Germany rooted artist turns the after a calendar month named track into a hybrid of a soothing yet club-compatible take. The atmospheric and pad-based intro comes to an end when the kick sets in after being one minute in the track. From then on 'Octubre' turns to an 'Aerathon' as the lead synth sets in and in the course of the track changes its tonality to evoke bizarre, almost mental moments and soak one into its melodic composition in the best Art of Noise-manner. But Aera emphasizes these 'moments of love' even more when a good ol' piano replaces the synth to create these – at least for these times – atypical feel good vibes that House Music once was known for. Before returning to the track's initial chords and basis, Aera enjoys the pleasantly arranged piano-key ride that it becomes inevitable for the listener not to join it  physically and mentally. 

Ccismō's EP 'Laso' will be released on Sol Eterno on October 25th, 2019.

Cologne based label Feines Tier kicks off 2021 with a collaborative five tracker from Dominik Marz and Yannick Labbé namely referring to Frank Herbert's Dune (cycle), which will as well as the EP be released this year. However, Labbé and Marz's approach shows that the duo has no spanner in the works but soaks its audience right into the action and making it hard to get out of this quicksand. Glitchy out of space chords over a lush yet raw and creaky bass line inspire any legwork on bending dance planks. Labbé irresistible drive of creating rolling vintage-sounding bass lines and Marz's instinct of writing synth-lines makes Dune the floating sandy take one wants to hear when things get mad in the live-streams and dance floors.
