one thing i wish the html5drummachine had would be mute buttons, but then again it's about the limitations in this case

(another limitation i discovered by pressing Backspace before i saved)

additional limitation was not using perc1, perc2 and crash sounds from the techno pack as i couldn't fit them in any way

some programming on the fly and also since it can switch between 2 patterns i took advantage of that

no layering, no additional processing, direct output from the browser

Single live track = Sound of 12 FireFoxes battling for CPU cycles. Minimising the windows doesn't stop them, but has drastic effects on the tempo. Maximising them all makes them glitch along eccentrically, in a manner I found satisfying.

OK - so it's mobile and cross-platform (if it works with your browser at all...) but, sheesh, 8-bit micro's sure did it better!

Wasted couple of hours trying to reverse engineer a local cached version of the app; to apply own sound sets, or modulate the controls algorithmically. Concluded there was no point.

I don't usually work with beats or drum machines - so I found this week's assignment a bit challenging. I played with the app for a while, to figure out what to do... recorded a few live performances and tried tweaking it to it's limits fast/slow/high&low pitches... But I really wanted to make a poly rhythmical piece, so I ended up oppening Firefox and Chrome each with the HTML505 drum machine, playing the same beat at the same tempo - 120...that happened not to be exactly the same tempo, so the rhythm goes from in sync slowly shifting to out of sync and then back into sync after a while.... quite lovely I think. 
The title is a homage to Steve Reich who composed a few pieces with a similar ideas...

World Premiere and Commissioned by American Composers Orchestra at Jazz at Lincoln Center on April 9, 2015, Conductor George Manahan

Sanctum, for orchestra and recorded sound, explores the sound of improvisation in Holiness-preaching traditions. I draw inspiration from recorded sermons, The Praying Slave Lady by Pastor Shirley Caesar, The Eagle Stirs His Nest by Reverend C. L. Franklin, and Reverend Charles Albert Tindley’s hymn, Stand By Me. Included are the voices of Marlene Pinnock and of activists in Ferguson, Missouri from 2014. Sanctum is my artistic response to recent events of police brutality. By employing techniques of layered repetition, rhythmic intensity, sounds of moaning and whooping, and voices of the past and present, Sanctum invokes solace found in the midst of persecution and tribulation.

Friday morning came and I had a busy weekend ahead of me, so I kinda decided that this weeks Junto had to be without me... but then came Monday morning and Leslie Rollins AKA 337is had uploaded the video and music to YouTube so I had to give it a go...
Leslie used an iOS app: Tunetrace and I remembered having downloaded Nature - Oscillator an iOS app by Alexander Zolotov http://www.warmplace.ru/soft/nosc/ a while ago, but never really used it.... so I had the video playing on my computer while recording with the app.. put the two together in Ableton with a little syncing - voila

"Make something playful and sweet? But how can I stroke my goatee pensively while listening to THAT?"

I tried to channel Ligeti in this piece, because some of his most amazing pieces also showed such a sense of fun and playfulness.

To make this piece, I wrote a mostly monophonic melody on piano and recorded it as MIDI in Ableton.  Then I moved the MIDI performance to a new track with a sampler in it.  I went to freesound,org and found a recording of the clock from a MIG fighter jet's cockpit (thanks Mortifreshman!), and sped it up to four times its original speed to remove the "silence" between ticks.  Then I dumped that into the sampler, knowing that the way changes in pitch affect playback speed would create some interesting results.

As it turns out the "silence" between clock ticks was a really interesting static sound, so I took the same sample and then slowed it down to a fourth of its original speed to extend the "silences."   Then I used Ableton's MIDI pitchshift tool to try it in different octaves - turns out 3 octaves below the original produced an interesting result.  The static worked best mixed pretty low, but it's in there.

a piano from a nord wave, through a custom patch on a lexicon PCM81. autumn decays.

The field recording at the beginning is a Bombe (designed by Alan Turing) running at Bletchley Park. The ticking is a vintage Swatch watch clipped to a Mikrophonie contact mic, run through an analogue delay. The main drone is coming from a Moog BFAM, with the filter slightly modulated by a Batumi sine LFO. The KR-55 drum machine is being clocked at audio rate from the BFAM's clock output, which itself is being modulated via a square wave from the Batumi. The KR-55's hi-hat, bass drum, and snare are blended in and out manually. The BFAM's sequencer is finally engaged at the end to produce the bleeps. Additional delay and reverb by Strymon.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
