"Darcy has a really assured manner of building momentum and energy in these tracks that doesn’t come off as calculated or pandering, which is refreshing in a 4/4 template. “Variations on Memory” jumped out at me the most though, I think it’s the way that wack bassline just plods through the entire track, building so much tension and then floating off at the end. To me, it’s the one of most unusual but effective “drops” I’ve heard in a long time.

With the remix, I felt I shouldn’t or couldn’t try to make a functional track with what Darcy had given me to rework, I felt I couldn’t do it justice. It’d be like that cleaner who painted over that 19th-century fresco of Jesus in Spain, not quite the point or the right idea. Instead, I took the core elements of the track, and re-arranged them in a somewhat liminal dance space – a kind of free-floating grime world – trying to put my own spin on Darcy’s creation." - https://soundcloud.com/niconiquo

ARA KOUFAX have worked together since bonding in high school, introducing their new project in 2014 with Brenda: a feature of Cutters Records' Oceans Apart compilation. Supported by the likes of Tim Sweeney and BBC Radio 1, Brenda paved way for the release of the pair’s eponymous EP: a three-track love letter to bubbling, textured electronic music from all corners of the globe.

Now, they return to Cutters Records to share ADULT CONCEPTS: a celebration of the year’s end and a snapshot of what can be expected of Ara Koufax in 2016.

The EP’s second track, Makers, is propelled by a buoyant, chugging rhythm section - nodding with love to Omar S, Motor City Drum Ensemble and the coming of warmer weather. Standing as a tonal counterpoint to Adult Concepts, the b-side fluctuates in intensity: embracing the quiet and chaotic in equal measure.

Ara Koufax is the sum part of Sam Gill and Luke Neher of Naysayer & Gilsun. Signed to Cut Copy's label, Cutters Records, they make paired back, crisp beats and sweet soundscapes to make you move. 

For this mix they've "put together a mix of old and new favourites that are bubbling away for us at the moment – tracks that have stirred serious evangelism and made us wrestle for the auxiliary cable at friend’s houses and in pre-club Ubers."

Amateur Dance - It's Really Something (Ara Koufax Remix)

After beginning 2015 with the release of three acclaimed singles, Melbourne pop quintet Foreign/National stepped off the stage and retreated to the serenity of their home-base: the Mornington Peninsula.

Shacking up in a small, sunburnt cabin with long-time producer and collaborator Joey Walker (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard), the band worked exhaustively on new material. Now, after nine months and countless trips between the city and coast, Foreign/National triumphantly return with 'Tristesse': the first taste of their thrilling debut album.

'Tristesse' is a lovesick postcard from the end of an Australian summer. Recalling the flutters and failures of a long-distance fling, the single delivers an intoxicating slice of Foreign/National's self-described "sad disco" style.

Trading in their usual Krautrock pulse for something more at home in the club, the band conjure warped and abrupt guitar stabs, sweeping strings and wandering bass. It's less Michael Rother, more Nile Rodgers.

Having already won fans at NME, The Guardian, Line of Best Fit, Earmilk, DIY, The 405, KCRW and Triple J, Foreign/National ready their full-length debut for eager ears.

Tristesse

Today, Melbourne outfit FOREIGN/NATIONAL share​ TOO SENTIMENTAL: another beautiful slice of warped pop lifted from their upcoming debut LP.

Where Tristesse — the band’s previous single — was driven by punchdrunk optimism, Too Sentimental wakes up sheepish and hungover, all too aware of nostalgia’s toxicity. Where Tristesse blushes, Too Sentimental winces.

Demoed in a style reminiscent of Italian psych duo Dumbo Gets Mad, Too Sentimental bloomed into something much bolder during the recording process with the band’s longtime producer, Joey Walker (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard).

The final product artfully oscillates between the band’s usual lo-fi, oversaturated sound and a wider, cleaner aesthetic. “We started by trying to mirror Deerhunter’s soaring guitar sounds and eventually landed on something closer to Yes’s Owner of a Lonely Heart played on shittier gear,” the band comment.
