Tonight’s show which is also our last show for the year, a tribute to and a celebration of much loved Kiwi musician, multi instrumentalist, songwriter and artist Hamish Kilgour, who sadly passed away recently in Christchurch, New Zealand. He will be greatly missed. As you may have realised we love kiwi music here at Do Your Thing, especially the many sonic creations Hamish has gifted us over the decades starting as a founding member of The Clean all the way through to the more recent explorations by the Sundae Painters. 

Described as “one of New Zealand music’s maverick spirits” with a countercultural approach to life and a kind, generous and friendly nature. He was an important and influential figure - an influence that resonated not only in New Zealand but around the world. The Clean & The Mad Scene’s US label Merge records said the following about Hamish. “As a drummer, Hamish had a propulsive, instantly recognisable style and an understated power; he was a joy to watch play. Hamish was one of the most colourful and creative musicians we have been lucky to work with.”

Ben Goldberg, co-founder of Ba Da Bing! Records, which released Kilgour’s solo music went on to say: “Hamish was inscrutable in his kindness, his love of music, and his politics. Even at his lowest moments, he never lost sight of his ideals. You can hear his heart in every beat, strum, and syllable he made.” Certainly a lot of love out there for Hamish. 

Over the next hour we will take a journey back through Hamish’s extensive catalogue starting in the early 1980s and working our way through the decades.

Having made a name for herself as a versatile selector, as suited to a club setting and those moments of total energetic release, as periods of reflection and stillness. It's the latter she has compiled in this mix, originally recorded at Hope St Radio in Naarm.

One of the founders of https://soundcloud.com/vortexvortexvortex and its associated skylab show, miscmeg is a major contributor to Naarm's scene, effortlessly adding an essential dimension, rooted in emotional dance music. 

With a 90s flavour, this mix meanders through sugarcoated, glistening downtempo, occasionally plunging into destabilising slow burns. miscmeg's ear for downtempo is on full show here, pausing for darker, dub-inflicted haziness and moments of melancholy before erupting shining light, love and red-hot desire. 

miscmeg, with what seems like a knowing wink, sprinkles breadcrumbs for us to follow, each moment a fragile, expanding, crystallising and, soon, razor sharp declaration of self-worth. She's a pro and we can't thank her enough : --)

what is it about music that makes us feel nostalgic? the memories of a first listen perhaps, the surrounding environment being imprinted on our minds. or could it be the nth time a track is played from a period, and then left to the aether as a marker to our past. only to be revived sporadically like a warm shock to the system when played again. through these lenses we look and listen to our guest for today, as we’re so excited to have the wonderful dj, label owner and much more, pjenné grace the sundays series. her expertly crafted mix hits all the sweet, sweet trip hop spots and wraps around the listener like an auditory hug. perfect to fight off those lingering end of the weekend anxieties with a solid dose of music from the 90s and 00s.
