Following a year of appearing on lineups alongside names like Space Wizard, Boogie T, and Ganja White Night, Devious kicks off 2022 with the DoYu Digital release “Terrain.” A foreboding build-up of crisp snares and chilling keys culminates in a voice appearing just before the drop to warn those who aren’t mentally prepared. True to the style that the Raleigh, North Carolina-based producer has been honing since his debut four years ago, the drop then launches into a trap-inspired wall of heavy bass, computerized instrumentation, and glitchy, rolling percussion.

DoYu Digital founder smol returns with “Suck Dis,” a bassy ode to the psychedelic “G-Funk” style that characterized West Coast hip-hop’s golden era. Featuring a synth lead reminiscent of 1990’s Southern Cali and smooth boom-bap percussion, smol updates this classic sound for the modern era with flashes of his signature warped and grainy basslines. With some jazz instrumentation added for extra vibes, “Suck Dis” once again demonstrates smol’s ability to coalesce the worlds of bass music and beatmaking through sound design.

Albuquerque friends Geezy and Tree Gaud combine their passion for classic 140 beats-per-minute dubstep on “Runnit,” delivering a track that’s true to the genre but updated with a modern edge. From the drop the focus is on bassweight, with the first half of the track centred on low end bass rolling over minimal percussion. After the breakdown the instrumentation shifts into a canopy of frenzied bass-heavy synths reminiscent of riddim dubstep. Both artists have been friends since before either of them began producing, and “Runnit” is a testament to their shared admiration for bass music’s history and their desire to innovate.

DoYu Digital founder smol teams up with Italian producer Mart!x on “Turn Me Yup,” a single that blends the bass and groove of classic dubstep with the influences of garage. From the onset dubstep’s quintessential drum pattern of the kick on the first beat and the snare on the third is instantly recognizable, and sets the tone along with low basslines and muted instrumentation. The first drop throws it back to a time when dubstep was just emerging from garage, blending organic piano chords with shuffling drums and warm bass. After a brief repose during the breakdown, the percussion is scaled down and the track shifts into a deluge of rolling basslines and warped vocal samples. 

This release marks the second time Mart!x has appeared on DoYu Digital since her label debut “Climb To Victory” was released in October 2021.

DoYu Digital’s newest roster addition ZURGLIN showcases his penchant for unrepentant and unique dubstep with IDGAF, the Calgary-based producer’s sophomore EP. Each of the four tracks stays true to dubstep’s most classical elements, particularly minimal percussion, thundering basslines, and brooding atmospheres. ZURGLIN simultaneously demonstrates how he’s made the genre his own by incorporating the sound design stylings of modern free-form bass music and using sampling to give tracks their own thematic flair.

Sitting at the traditional dubstep tempo of 140 beats-per-minute, the title track “IDGAF” is an exercise in juxtaposing intensity with space. Stripped-down percussion, frenzied laser-like bass pulses, and subtle layers of atmospheric instrumentation combine with “bichota”-style rap vocals to give this track an unwaveringly gritty soundscape.

“Connect The Cutz” switches the atmosphere, opting for sludgy, slow burning halftime dubstep oozing with textured bass. Following an intro that sounds like it’s pulled from a psychological thriller the track’s thick staticky bass takes centre stage, warping and shifting with each beat while intermittent samples retain that horror movie aesthetic.

Premiered by Headbang Society, “Smoke This Club” sees ZURGLIN brandishing his wavetable sound design chops to unleash a menacing and otherwordly mechanized soundscape. Another lumbering halftime track, weighty riddim-style staccato bass hits are interspersed with metallic sounds and a flurry of warped digital instrumentation.

Premiered by The Gradiant Perspective, “Whip It” distinguishes itself with it’s smoky, meditative atmosphere that draws influence from genres like G-funk and gangster rap. From the drop the track is dominated by a wonky, note-shifting leading synth and a wall of low-end bass. This synth, in conjunction with “whip it” vocal samples throughout the track, fuels its hip-hop-adjacent West Coast character.

In keeping with his goal to deliver a ghastly take on dubstep Kelowna’s Kuhlosul unveils “Wonk Away,” an ode to the Wonky spinoff of dubstep that emerged in the late 2000’s through artists like Joker, Guido, and Flying Lotus. Whereas early dubstep hinged on dark minimalism, Wonky featured mid-range synths brimming with character, and soundscapes that paid homage to G-funk and West Coast hip-hop. Kuhlosul delves right into these influences, opening the track with trappy synths and a pitched-down rap vocal. The drop immediately launches a wave of Wonky’s iconic pitch bending mid-range synth lines interspersed with modern riddim-style bass hits, making “Wonk Away” a fresh take on a treasured period of dubstep’s history.
