Walking the streets in these damp, anxious days that all run together lately, I was approached by a man who would blend right into the neighborhood, layered in flannel and sweatshirts for sleeping. Rough, but for his shoes. (Never cheap out on anything that separates you from the ground.)

“Pezzner,” he called out, from a safe distance. “What did the mangrove say to the marauding hordes.” My soul left my body for a moment and my voice responded on its own. “Petrichor.”

He caught my eye, nodded, left a padded envelope on the ground and vanished.

The envelope had passed through many hands, slipped into the bed of a ferry-bound truck, passed from one fellow traveler to another, stashed under the counters of anarchist bookstores, left tucked between books at Little Free Libraries. The greenish stains suggested that at one point it had been swum across a lake. Another DAT, contents encoded here unabridged, and a letter from someone who called himself The Sentinel.

The Vessel lived out his days on Shaw Island, under a canopy of trees that gets smaller and smaller every season. His condition the same, any electricity lit his brain on fire, could only bring himself to compose one day a year, only at night, out of sight. Until he met The Angel, an eccentric with means, who built for him a device.

A Faraday Cage to block all electromagnetic emissions. Burlap walls, for atmosphere. A system of pulleys and levers, wood and rope, all running into a box that sat outside. An entirely mechanical control surface. No electrons in here. The Vessel lit fires, watched the shadows dance, closed his eyes, and disappeared into the motion for hours at a time. The Sentinel came every morning to change the tapes. The Angel watched and pondered, his plans unknown.

The box sat sealed, bare except for another set of ideograms, scratched in day by day over time. Inside, the usual bedroom-producer shit. Outside, the ideograms told a story, passed from the Vessel to the Sentinel and drawn by the Angel, of a man who became another creature. Alert to the lowest frequencies, feeling music deep in the soil below their feet. Music that brings messages, from distant friends, warning of new creatures, and the danger they brought. Skin alive to the world, so sensitive it can detect the landing of a single fly. A mind capable of keeping a map of the world inside. A mind that can look in a mirror and see a soul it knows well. A mind that can grieve.

After processing its contents, I filled the envelope with granola bars and walked it down to the market. The clerk gave me a knowing look as I placed it on the counter behind a stack of pork rinds from the previous century. As I walked out, a young man carrying a plastic bag and wearing impeccable shoes walked in.

Doza is a Seattle-based DJ/producer who has played a seminal role in the Pacific Northwest electronic music community throughout the 21st century. A first generation Venezuelan-American born in Texas who has been based in Seattle since childhood, Doza originally made his mark on the dancefloor circuit as one-half of the production duo LawnChair Generals during the early 2000s. Although it's been nearly a decade since the last LawnChair Generals release, Doza has stayed active with solo productions and remixes, as well as co-founding Hunt & Gather Records alongside local luminaries Dave Pezzner and Michael Manahan. 20 years deep in the PNW scene, Doza continues to keep Seattle's dancefloors moving amidst all of the city's undeniable transformational changes.

Doza's exclusive guest DJ set for Midnight In A Perfect World takes the listener on a hypnotic journey through exquisite deep house grooves to create a joyful and cathartic dance party. Aired 12/06/21

KEXP'S MIDNIGHT IN A PERFECT WORLD: DOZA

It is our great honor to share with you the next expression by Hunt & Gather label founder and House music raconteur Pezzner. In his latest tale Pezzner, ever the eclecticist and vanguard, transcribes grandiose orchestral expression, Broadway vocal jazz, exalted post-disco, and Balearic tones into a format that we can all gather and dance to. This is "Sunrising" and it comes accompanied by two reinterpretations: a propellant electric disco romp by label partner Doza, and a sterling but jovial expression by Deep House legend (and our dear friend) Fred Everything. This release is capped off by Pezzner's playful and flowing reperformance of Herb Alpert's dancefloor classic "Rise". 
The artwork was created by Robbie Busch, DC Comics writer and penciler.

In the spring of 2017 Doza (Carlos Mendoza) was combing the the beach of Inapupan, a small island in the Philippines, when he saw something both strange and familiar: a weathered bit of shell peaking out of the sand with orange and ivory tiger stripes. He recognized it as the armor of a nautilus, one of the planet's oldest and deepest-diving animals. He held it in his hand, imagining the bioluminescent monsters it’s creator might have witnessed during its dark, cold dives. “Nautilus” is a latin word derived from the ancient greek “nautilo” meaning “sailor.” A sailor himself, Doza arrived home inspired to soundtrack this creature’s funky nautical journey. Electronic musicians today have access to a vast ocean of sounds from soft-synths, soft-samplers, mobile apps, boutique hardware and modular synths. When Dozabegan making music in the late 90s as half of LawnChair Generals (with Peter Christianson), the equipment available was expensive and cumbersome by today’s standard. In a way those limitations were a blessing in that they forced the Generals to extract asmuch function and creativity out of each piece of equipment as possible, and to learn their instruments inside and out. To stay focused on The Nautilus, Doza eschewed soft-synths and complicated outboard set-ups for the sounds from one of his first pieces of equipment, the PC2x. This tank-like stage keyboard was created in 2001 by Kurzweil Music Systems, a company founded by renowned futurist Raymond Kurzweil and Stevie Wonder (yes, that Stevie Wonder).Although short on sounds relative to other larger keyboards of the time, the PC2x has the famous Variable Architecture Synthesis Technology (V.A.S.T.) and, in the hands of a tinkerer, is capable of morphing, organic, other-worldly tones. The result of this self-limited production technique applied to the deep-sea daydream is The Nautilus, an immersive dance floor voyage complete with evolving drones, pitching and swelling textures, and growling encounters in a swirled up auditory expanse. All of this sits atop a disco-tech structure and latin battery that is vintage Doza, supporting a locomotive synth bassline that dives and rises again like the intrepid little creature of the deep that inspired it.

Following Doza’s EPIC theme “The Nautilus” comes the warm and uplifting single-tracker "Andy, Wally & Ray". 
As where "The Nautilus" was an exercise in self-limitation, using only sounds from one keyboard, "Andy, Wally & Ray" brings three key instruments together again: the Alesis Andromeda A6, Waldorf Microwave XT, and Ray Kurtzweil’s stalwart PC2x (hence the title). Here, Doza illustrates the concept of electronic instruments as friends, complete with personalities and their own voices to be discovered and celebrated. With crecendos a plenty, "Andy, Wally & Ray" walks listeners through choral peaks and valleys with layers of blissful electronic nuances perfect for dance floors and headphones alike.

Doza a.k.a. Carlos Mendoza (of LawnChair Generals and Hunt & Gather) is very aware of the effect the gloomy Seattle climate has on his music. It's even a point of pride. The weather can drive the city’s music makers indoors and underground, where they cooperate on technique, equipment and events; music makers like Pezzner, Lusine, Hanssen, Raica, Mat Anderson. The camaraderie influences the music, as does the low light. If you're any fan of deep house you've likely heard Doza’s music. Carlos has been contributing to the global house music underground since 2001 as one half of LawnChair Generals, one of the most respected early 00’s house music duos in the U.S. Doza’s solo sound could be considered deeper, darker, more textured than the early works of LawnChair Generals. The first Doza remix of Hanna's "Time" on Viva Recordings in 2002, with its dubbed-out pads and hypnotic rhythms, foreshadowed his future body of work. His Get Physical debut “Ixchel”, “The Doza E.P.” on Doc Martin’s Sublevel imprint, and the sweeping "In Waves E.P." on Supremus Records exemplify Doza’s recurring theme: simple and articulate rhythms carrying strong and evolving narratives that draw the audience in. In 2015 Doza partnered with Pezzner and Michael Manahan on Hunt & Gather Records to deliver forward-thinking music to the world’s discerning dancefloors. The latest fruits of this union are Doza's disco-tech stormer "The Nautilus" followed by chord-bliss "Andy, Wally & Ray", released to enthusiastic support from international artists Âme, John Digweed, Dixon, LTJ Bukem, M.A.N.D.Y., Danny Tenaglia, Seth Troxler, and more.
