Alberta Balsam is a music producer, DJ and live act from Rotterdam. She produces the kind of electronic music that borders on techno, IDM and electronica. Sometimes experimental and sometimes surprisingly accessible. As her name already suggests, (Alberta Balsam is derived from one of AFX tracks), she's influenced by artists like Aphex Twin, Clark, Lakker and Four Tet. Her heavy and dark beats are often ofset by spacious and wide synths and snippets of vocals, often heavily processed. Having a musical background as a keyboard player and a music production student at the conservatory of Rotterdam, Alberta is clearly obsessed with intricate and at times complicated harmonies and syncopated beats.
Alberta Balsam was already present on Red Bull Mixtape Vol 4, featured on the Fog Mountain Compilation 010 and Beatitude Vol 4 by Lowriders Recordings. She also played the 2016 MTV Rec festival

Zaterdag 13 januari was ik te gast bij Justin Verkijk in hét elektronische muziekprogramma van 3FM, The Beat. Speciaal hiervoor heb ik een mix gemaakt. Een uur lang karakteristieke Hi Tech Soul Movement tracks (‘87-‘95) uit mijn RoXY periode. Voor een sneak preview op de trip die we op zondag 31 maart in Paradiso gaan maken.

It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. WARPED : 30 years of Warp records (1989-2020) 

An incredibly adventurous label that reaches a massive, loyal audience. It's the label that signs the most interesting talent. The home of Aphex Twin, Autechre, and BoC. Its story began in Sheffield in 1989 during the UK's acid house explosion. The bleep sound Warp helped shape and popularise was probably the UK's first truly innovative response to US house and techno, a sound to call its own. Through the Artificial Intelligence series, the label laid the groundwork for experimental electronic music as we know it today—music that didn't rely on a club environment to come alive—and went on to explore new sonic possibilities through IDM and fusions of guitars and dance music. The creation of, or response to, many major movements of electronic music's past three decades can be found in its vast catalogue.
