DJ / Producer 99 Letters in Osaka is a solo project by Takahiro Kinoshita. We have released EP mainly overseas Vinyl · cassette label so far. In 2015, "Serie Limitee Hors - Serie 005 EP", SEAGRAVE "12 Mirrors Album" was released from Serie Limitee Records. In 2016 I released "Untold Future EP" from Dalmata Daniel. From an industrial, drawn style, warm synths and somewhat psyched handsome house tracks are also supported by a wide range of Raw and Techno. Len Faki recorded on his label "LF RMX" in 2018 and released as "Lazer Beam" (Len Faki Hardspace Mix). Adam Beyer will be talking about playing fest.

Two more club focussed edits of tracks from the forthcoming 99Letters release Makafushigi, a companion to the recently released album Kaibou Zukan.

On Makafushigi we find Takahiro Kinoshita further exploring his “gagaku techno” concept across five long-form tracks that push the material into grimier, almost industrial territory. The title of the last record translates as “anatomical picture book”, reflected in music that sounds for the most part open, direct and danceable. Makafushigi though essentially means “mystery tape” and this is echoed in shadowy textures, metallic clangs and mood pieces that could easily soundtrack the bleakest of film noirs. It’s not a one dimensional listen however, light frequently pierces holes in the gauzy curtain of these immersive jams, particularly where loops of the traditional Japanese string and percussion instruments that were chopped, screwed and utilised to such great effect on Kaibou Zukan enter the mix. The more electro-tinged passages could also be interpreted as a fresh take on the concrete and technology obsessed mid-70s Kraftwerk of Autobahn and Radio-Activity. A signifier of much more to come from a producer who has developed a unique sound palette and approach to electronic music.

Acclaimed Japanese musician 99LETTERS joins Phantom Limb for new album Zigoku / 地獄, seamlessly processing traditional Japanese instrumentation into pitch-black techno and quasi-industrial sound design.

“This album is made with the theme of human death,” 99LETTERS (Osaka producer Takahiro Kinoshita) writes of Zigoku / 地獄 [Eng: hell], his first album for Phantom Limb. “Even if I eventually end up in hell when I die, it might be a more peaceful place than I had imagined. ​​The whole album may represent the world of death that I desire.”

Though the music of Zigoku / 地獄 is ostensibly programmed with dark, disorientating, disturbing sound design, 99LETTERS continues his now-characteristic practice of sampling, processing and disguising traditional Japanese instrumentation to develop a sound world both organic and unsettling. The very real presence of beauty, culture, and folklore remains throughout the record, in attendance as a kind of heaven to offset the willful hell of Kinoshita’s craft.

Appropriately - and in his typically cryptic language - Kinoshita speaks of human interference with reality and morality as key themes of the album: “Everyone has a good and bad person within them, which can be deceived by misinformation and superstition. The bad side can be ferocious and can easily hurt people. Sometimes I think that the present age is a complicated and difficult era to live in, and that this era may be hell.”

Disciples alumni 99LETTERS celebrates his new album Zigoku [地獄] on Phantom Limb with a Bleep mix of underworldly selections. Though Zigoku [地獄] directly translates as 'Hell', the Osaka-based producer's mix is less the Nine Circles of Dante's Inferno but more of an ambient distillation of the fiery environs of his own full length. Burnt away by corrosives, the layers of his selection leave us endless illuminating plains to wander laid down by fellow guides KMRU, Coby Sey, Actress, the late great Ryuichi Sakamoto and 99LETTERS himself of course, in particular on his own beautifully longing cut, Owaranai Osaka (未終大阪).

Ruminating on this mortal coil, 99LETTERS explains:

"I had a story in mind before creating this mix. It all started with the album "Kaibou Zukan/解剖図鑑" released on Disciples. The scenery and images that we see in our lives are just like the photos that appear when we press the shutter of a camera, and music is the story that mysteriously appears in our minds when we listen to a song. Everyone can feel this phenomenon. Life is not only fun, but it can also be painful and sad. In the mix for Bleep, I expressed these crossroads in life in my own way, and combined songs by artists I respect. For me, it's similar to the feeling you get when you're on a train or driving in a car. I hope that everyone can be happy in their own way, and I would be happy if you listen to this mix and let it become a part of your life." - @99-letters
