Chapter 17 describes the woman, ‘Babylon the Great, Mother of all Prostitutes and Obscenities in the World’, seated on a scarlet beast, and her destruction. Many commentators argue that the woman represents the apostate church which will be allowed global influence for a time during the tribulation period, but will then be totally destroyed by political leaders.

The Greek word ekklesia is usually translated ‘church’. Apparently this goes back to King James who instructed his translators to use ‘church’. Ekklesia is probably better translated as ‘assembly’ or ‘gathering’.
