It occurred to me that there are some parallels between sound synthesis and the way we shape our lives; namely:

1. Customization and Control
2. Adaptability and Navigating Imperfections
3. Creativity and Experimentation

And there are surely others…

But… I put together a musical thought exercise—a sonic meditation—exploring what it means to sift through all the [digital?/analog?] noise.

Morn[in] Synthesis

For the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, death was not seen as the extinguishing of a light but as “putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.” And for American poet Raymond Carver, the questions that come at the end of our lives might best be resolved upon reflection by feeling ourselves ‘beloved on the earth.’ For many who are yet living, though, the prospect of stepping into great unknowns can be quite uncomfortable. 

Together, a group of wonderers at Death Faire 2024 in Pittsboro, NC built a community valediction—a farewell—to those parts of ourselves that shun the light. We explored how to meaningfully meet and care for our deepest selves so that when our dawn comes, we will already know it. 

This musical rendition was played, in part, on pomegranates, peppers, and peas—reminders of the earth and the life-giving forces that sustain us and the place to which our bodies will eventually return. These community performances connect touch, movement, and energy and are represent the inspired solos of the community members who participated; because, as Kahlil Gibran puts it, “what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?”
