Dive into a warm bath of dreamy ambient and hypnotizing club-ready synth patterns with Modo Mero’s debut EP ‘Bits and Pieces’. With his cloudy harmonies, long melodic lines, and rich grainy textures the Dutch-born producer and live performer creates an electronic nebula of musical bliss and compelling compositions.

Throughout the past year, Bits and Pieces was created in Modo Mero’s hometown in the countryside where he spent a lot of time experimenting with recorded sounds and created soundscapes inspired by the peace and quietness of his surroundings. The record therefore came to life in a playful way by gathering little ‘bits and pieces’ of these sessions and gluing them together as a whole. It displays glimpses of synthetic landscapes, leaving us in a dreamy world of atmospheres, all with a sense of kindness and warmth.

Celebrating the extensive history of electronic music while still exploring the limitless means of modern music production, Modo Mero is mastering the illustrious art of merging, fusing, and blending styles and sound. Whether you are floating in a nightclub or staring out the window on a late bus ride home, there is always a time and place to listen, drift away and letting your mind conjure up a story of your own.

Dragon’s Eye Recordings is pleased to announce 'Suisei,' the latest reissue from Tokyo-based abstractionist Yui Onodera. 'Suisei' was originally released in 2007 on and/OAR (USA) to critical reception, drawing comparisons to Thomas Koner, Eliane Radigue, Phil Niblock, and Keith Berry for its sustained harmonics and darkly-tinged, staticky drones. The album is composed from field recordings made with consumer-grade dictation mics, contact microphones, and pump organ, which Onodera employs in both subtle and overt ways. 

The word suisei—translated simultaneously from the Japanese as ‘aquatic,’ a comet, or the word for the planet Mercury—aptly represents a record that shifts ambiguously through textural deconstruction of some watery, isolated landscape. Cinematic in its slippery and grinding aural imagery, the record charters a natural path through the transformation of organic elements, chattering, pinging, scraping, and washing through oscillations while avoiding the realm of the grotesque.  While characteristic of Onodera's microscopic, hallucinatory style, 'Suisei' stands apart from other releases in its massive coverage of aural territory.

FA054: Sentient - Cursory EP (OUT NOW)

Japanese classical genre "Gagaku" is the oldest form of harmonic, ansamble music existing today. The music was performed at the imperial palace on the formal events of state and on significant holidays. "Gagaku" evolved in Heien period, when Japan experienced major influence from chinese culture and Confucianism. The Japanese diplomats who travelled to China for exploring Chinese culture and it's court music, returned home with  instruments and as well as  the knowledge of playing them. In the 10th century, after the fusion of Chinese, Korean and Indian music in the Japanese singing and dancing style, "Gagaku" started to take it's own path and became one of the most famous music genres in Japan.
"Gagaku" ansamble consists of 16 people. The ansamble is divided into 3 sections woodwinds, strings and percussion. The function, as well as playing aesthetics of each isntrument is significant. In my music selection, you will hear the authentic sound of "Gagaku" as well as some modern artists who use this genre in their work.

Shanghai-based producer and DJ Laughing Ears became known to us through her 'Metamorphosis' EP on the inimitable Chinabot, an imprint showcasing some of the most exciting Asian artists operating in the experimental electronic sphere.

She's carved out her own sonic niche, which sees her chopping and screwing footwork and dubstep-inspired beats with haunting atmospheres and layers of synthesis. Since then she's also landed on the likes of Infinite Machine for her debut LP 'Blood' before being snapped up by Untold's Hemlock Recordings for her latest EP, 'Losing Track': another deep dive into broken rhythms, bass experiments and eerie atmospheres.

Off the back of the release, we asked her to deliver a mix which gives you an introduction to the sounds that form the backbone of her DJ sets and her own productions.
