After winter breeding season, on a spring dawn in the dripping forest on a rare clear morning, an Albert Lyrebird sings the local territorial "whistle song". No mimicry or fancy display, just "I'm here, this is me, ", as he joins the very vocal and close Yellow-throated scrubwrens along with Logrunner, Whipbirds, Shining Bronze Cuckoo, Tree-creepers, Lewin's honeyeaters, White-browed scrubwrens and others.

Hextape’s new concept album >:) (‘angry smiley”) scatters the listeners across 35 mins of chopped up jungle, footwork, techno, noise, and classical cello directly inspired by the solo rave-like experience of an MRI machine. The sounds of an MRI usually evade recording, as electrical equipment interferes with the magnetic functions of the machine, yet produce a constant stream of electrical noise as it uses electro-magnetic and radiofrequency waves to create resonant imaging of a subject’s body. Upon realising the MRI produces music that could rival some of the best sound artists of our time, whilst being inextricably ephemeral and unique to the patient’s body, Hextape approaches their memories of the sound like a recitation from an oral culture.

Drawing on the artist’s experience both as a patient and as a guest researcher at the Melbourne Brain Centre, >:) imagines a secret world of sanctioned and pirate radio stations only audible inside the scanner, conveying the siren song of the hospital both inward (to the listener) and outward (to the rave).

2 Big Animals

In the summer of 2019 i purchased a box of silkworms from a woman named Tracy Trees. I fed them leaves from a mulberry tree outside my house which i harvested every day. i grew fascinated by the way they moved, the feeling of their sticky little feet on my skin, the sound they made crunching on their leaves. they were slow and gentle and strange. they would escape from their box and build little silk tents around my bedroom. they pooped all the time, and some died from fungal disease or rectal prolapse. i would rub the soft silk strands they made on my upper lip as. i watched them. they pupated, metamorphosed, bred and died. i raised their children, and then their children's children, then their children too. I loved them dearly
