An unexpected, but inevitable collaboration between yours truly and brother in-arms Mutual Friend, the track began its life as a nothing more than a 4 bar loop – an upbeat snare punctuating an otherwise beatless environment of foggy, gray, forlorn, distant, yet oddly musical noise. Every other bar, a jackhammer barrage of sub kicks would invade the otherwise overcast tableau with flickering darkness. We sat on this loop for a minute, knowing it was – for lack of a better term – ‘the future’ (or at least a bleak variant that we subjectively default to), but unsure of how to proceed. It wasn’t until the ripped-cone reese, and its incessant three-to-four notes of non-resolving doom, that the track, as it is today, began to emerge. The remainder pretty much wrote itself: the ‘action news’-style arp, the ersatz duduk respite, the reductionist electro beat. The finished product slyly interpolates and assimilates facets of everything we love – from Drexciyan electro to circa ‘94 jungle and hardcore; from the heyday dungeon sound to contemporary vitreous grime; from the laidback infra-grooves of midskool dub to the pneumatic urgency of 2012-2016 club music. Or maybe it’s just a particularly heavy, particularly murky little tune that we’re bigging up too much. Truth is, all of these layers to it – they’re only visible in retrospect. As we were making the tune, all we did was bang our heads and put entirely too much volume through my poor Adams. Because it felt (and still feels) like the one where we neatly summarized all that Liar, Mutual Friend, and Tessier-Ashpool are about, in just under four-and-a-half minutes. “My job is to find heat, and then make it hotter. That’s the role of the DJ.” the sample goes. This is a vital point to be made, in these days of ‘playing-to-the-crowd’ complacency. “Sidewinder”, like the AIM-9 air-to-air infrared homing missile. “Sidewinder”, like the nocturnal, venomous, desert-dwelling rattlesnake that undulates akin to a sine wave in order to ascend dunes. There’s an aural counterpart for each vertebra of the conceptual backbone. And every bit of the concept is entirely deferential to the functional structure. No bells, no whistles. No fat, no flab. Just lean muscle. A ratio of 1:1. Exactly how we like it.

TAR014 - Liar & Mutual Friend - Sidewinder

Back in 2012-2013, at the apex of jackin’, ruffneck UK bassline house, a very distinct tune was making the rounds. It would start off somewhat typically – feelgood warehouse energy, rave paraphernalia, a smooth but firm crescendo... before cutting off abruptly into menacing laughter and abyssal hoovers, only to feint and drop into UK-funky-tinged house viscera anchored by, arguably, the most severe wobble bass since “Spongebob”. I was one of few privy to this absolute belter, and even so only via a lo-fi rip which happened to disclose that it was a Hostage tune in the filename. I renamed the file “the mad one.mp3” and eagerly awaited a full, official release. It never came. And so, another legendary tune had slipped through the cracks and had been lost to the vicissitudes of the industry. That is, until I recently hit up Mr. Alan Parley, pka Hostage, and persuaded him not only to dig it up for me, but also do me the honor of releasing it with us on Tessier-Ashpool. It is then that I finally found out that this long-time staple of my 4/4 sets was named “NT1” – a contraction of “now this one”. Fitting.

Premiere: Liar & Mutual Friend - Sidewinder

On the remix tip, the one and only Kamikaze Space Programme coaxes sound into steel and concrete, as he reshapes the original into a frenetic, incessant electro roller with ample, DJ-friendly structure and frequent nods to techstep and neurofunk. Most notably, KSP subverts the original’s reese’s utility as mere textural and melodic backdrop – here, it takes center stage, carrying most of the bass weight, and morphing across the spectra in ways that are so novel they seem almost peerless. Indeed, as it seamlessly moves through warping metal, chthonic rumbling, bursts of white noise and everything in between, it all but unearths the brutalist underpinnings of “Sidewinder”.

We start off with Delo’s “S-Wer” – a skeletal, syncopated 909 workout punctuated by namesake onomatopoeic vocal cuts, sporadic sub pulses and bubbly percussive trills. Never before (outside the realm of yesteryear minimal techno) has a track done more with less.

Yak’s “Anju” is a steppy ting, starting off as a stripped-back soulful garage number, before shifting gears into a bassline-driven belter riddim. As said bassline strobes and slithers along, Yak gradually brings back the funk and soul, expertly balancing heft and poise with almost jazz-inflected flair. One of those rare day & night tracks – equally effective in the club, at home, and on the way to and from.

“Khorostasia”, which approximates to “carols” in English, is just that – the acousmatic subversion of a devotional choral piece, filtered through the brothers’ penchant for coaxing verdant futurism from the otherwise dry rock of pre-classical, Byzantine ecclesiastics.

Accompanying track “Space Elevator Music” does pretty much what is cheekily says on the tin – channelling the demurer, acid-jazz-inflected works of soundtrack heavyweights such as Nobuo Uematsu or Norihiko Hibino, one could easily imagine listening to this while escaping the gravity well in a reinforced glass cube.

They’ve released with Wide Angle Recordings, Manual Music, Wolfskull Ltd., Cinematique and many more, amassing an impressive back-catalogue of sophisticated, high-end melodic techno. As ShamanStems, they’ve crafted countless commercial sample packs and sound libraries, of countless sorts, winning awards, topping charts and insuring that even the most casual of listeners have heard their work, whether knowingly or less so. And, with their “Khorostasia” single, they provided the swansong to now-suspended cyberpunk imprint Tessier-Ashpool Recordings –  progenitor to, and now subsidiary of Drastic Arts. It was very fitting that Dual Shaman would score the “opening ceremony” to our newly minted multimedia collective… so they did, writing their first full-length material as well, in the process. As such, Drastic Arts is proud to present DADA001: “Expiati”, an uncompromising and many-pronged account of atonement – theirs, ours, yours. 

Many languages are at play here. Ecclesiastic Latin accounts for most of the track titles. Devotional live outboard improvisation accounts for most of the songwriting process. Schizoid acid riffs account for most of the bite. A sylvan, deeply nocturnal strain of New Beat accounts for most of the emotional context. Clipped, industrial dialects of techno and electro account for most of the rhythmic underpinnings of this 9-track communiqué. And, for a single standout track, their native Romanian accounts for most touching invocation of rain.

Frequency-modulated hats ricochet about as gabberized depth-charge kicks interrupt lung-imploding reeses. Midrange percussion so crisp it’s edible splays itself around vocal centrepieces warped beyond recognition. Tasteful bouts of braindance edit mania set the stage for tour de force solos. Equally suitable for switched-on club settings and as BGM for retro Twitch streaming.

We swear this is not some ‘98 release we dug up and are re-releasing. It was first thought up in 2016. Finished in 2017. In 2018, finally released. A love letter to 20 years ago, a love letter to 20 years from now. And in spite of the title… atonement for neither.
