Upfront 001: Rabit

Kerri Chandler's hefty kick drum. Todd Edwards'  vocal cut ups. Coki's snarling sub bass. These elements are sonic signatures for the producers that created them - components of their celebrated sounds that can be recognised from a mile off.  The last couple of years have seen a new musical motif start to reach towards that pantheon of timeless sounds, in the shape of Chris Pell aka. Murlo's effervescent synth melodies. An illustrator by day, Pell cut his teeth in music as a DJ - playing everything from Soca to Garage, before he began to sculpt his distinct style across releases for Glacial Sound and Unknown To The Unknown. Serving as the gloss over 2-Step and UKG indebted rhythmic foundations, his colourful synths have helped to separate his club constructions from the pack - making him one of the most exciting producers to emerge in the so called second wave of instrumental Grime. With his latest EP, 'Into Mist' out on Rinse 2nd November, Pell looks set to cement his status as both an innovator of sounds and destroyer of dancefloors - with four wildly creative tracks that make a mockery of genre conventions.

Looking to bring in the 200th edition of our mix series in style, we invited Pell to deliver a dizzying club-ready selection of his influences, current favourites and original productions.

We recorded this exclusive SMOOTH CRIMINALS set (SKREAM & BENGA) back in 2004, recorded live from FILTHY DUB in Brixton, 19th March 2004.

Filthy Dub was an event ran by Plastician (then Plasticman) and was held at The Telegraph, Brixton, South London (up the road from DMZ’s former home, Mass).

2014’s been something of a break out year for Wen. After releasing his debut album, Signals, back in March on Keysound, Owen Darby’s seen his profile rise dramatically; and in releasing a collaboration with Parris on Tempa and inaugurating the Wisdom Teeth label with his track ‘Late Night,’ the lad’s proved that his brand of muscular, grime indebted club music has got a set of curvaceous, well defined legs. Ahead of appearing in Room Two for Butterz on 21st November (alongside sets on the 26th December and the 16th January) he’s kindly put together a mixtape that outlines his dancefloor focused selections way better than we ever could, even if we wrote a hundred of these curt introductions.

Brooklyn minimalist electronicists Glass Gang merge the finest in Trap, Rap, House and a particularly amazing chopped and screwed remix of the Artful Dodger's 'Rewind' on this 34 minute mix of emerging musical thoughts that provide a brief insight into the mind of  Brooklyn's Glass Gang, who have just dropped their debut mixtape Lower. It's a powerful singular statement from a shapeshifting group that still exists in relative anonymity despite their sharing the stage with artists like The Range, Ryan Hemsworth and Trust over the past few months. With sounds ranging from Shoregaze to UKG, the self-produced release is the sound of a band doing something unlike their peers - pulling from disparate genres to make something entirely unique.

Anamanaguchi, the New York-based chiptune quartet, had a breakout hit in 2014 with “Pop It” (No. 48 on our list of 101 Most Vital Tracks of the year). The group uses instruments that include synthesizers and Nintendo consoles to craft a sound that is glitchy, trippy and more fun than a barrel of Donkey Kongs.
