The missing component in the history of Turkish pop and one of the earliest exponents of Turkish electronic music alongside İlhan Mimaroǧlu and Bülent Arel, Gökçen Kaynatan electrified the rock and roll scene of the late 50s/early 60s – sending teenagers wild with his custom built guitars and back lines – helping charge the climate for the birth of Anatolian rock. Then, from the sanctuary of his private studio, he revolutionised the industry with his pioneering use of electronics whilst hanging the sonic wallpaper in the living rooms of an entire generation of telly addicts as in house composer of choice for Turkey’s first national television channel TRT 1.  Despite having a modest discography of only four 7” singles to his name his influence is a major current that flows through over 50 years of Turkish pop culture.

Compiled with unparalleled access to his private studio vault, Finders Keepers proudly presents the first-ever collection of Gökçen Kaynatan’s pioneering early electronic works. Featuring a selection of his experimental pop and rock recordings dating from as early as the 1968 it features both of the highly sought after 1 Numara singles – including a never before heard extended version of Evren – as well as previously unheard archive material and songs recorded for and broadcast exclusively on TRT 1 – most of them never to be repeated. In helping Gökçen end his self-imposed 44-year exile from the record industry we can now share with you the first of these important recordings from a genuine maverick who helped shape the face of modern Turkish music, as well as shedding some light on the rise of one of Anatolian rock and pops must fruitful and experimental periods that began with the arrival (and subsequent explosion) of domestic synthesisers on the Turkish scene.

Joe well and truly had the wind in his sails just a few years back, quietly building up an impressive discography on the likes of Hemlock Recordings and Hessle Audio – pretty much UK royalty. Critical praise was heaped on his DJing too, his FACT mix still very much holding up today. Although his release schedule had always been somewhat irregular, in late 2013 he seemed to take a step back into the shadows completely. Two years later, he popped his head above ground to drop an edit of Bobby McFerrin that would soundtrack hundreds of festival sets that summer before he vanished once again. While sporadic use of his Twitter account signalled that the project wasn’t quite over, it would be four years before Joe returned to releasing original pieces of music.

The announcement of new records on Hessle Audio always feels like an event in itself, but when they revealed that new material from the modest maestro was on the cards, a certain corner of the community rejoiced. While his music has aged well in the time he spent away – “Slope” still serving as a crescendo moment in DJ sets across the board – such a reception to the news is proof that absence only made the heart grow fonder in this case. Here at Truants, we were bowled over to find out that Joe was game for a Truancy Volume. To go alongside his genre-hopping, rip-roaring medley of a mix, we caught up with him to discuss his approach to making music, the influence of film in his work and everything he’s been upto in the time between.

Over the past two years, the coastal city of Durban in South Africa has spearheaded the sound of the rapidly growing gqom scene. Throughout Durban townships, the percussive mixture of hip-hop and house elements had primarily spread through a series of file-sharing sites, with Facebook groups and WhatsApp threads acting as hotspots for sharing artists' latest creations. In one of gqom's more fascinating ascents, local taxi companies – in an attempt to seem more attractive to rival departments – started playing gqom in their minivans, as wonderfully highlighted in the YouTube documentary Woza Taxi - Gqom Secret Stash Out Of The Locations. In the same way the internet and social sharing helped gqom reach new audiences throughout Durban, gqom soon found itself spreading across the globe, with labels and journalists in London and Rome quickly championing the sound. One of the genre's most prominent producers – a merit that's propelled his reputation as the 'King of Gqom' – is DJ Lag. Our 194nd Truancy Volume is a storming snapshot of the relentless dynamism of gqom and DJ Lag's masterful presentation of the sound. We're incredibly proud to have a true pioneer as part of the series and we had the pleasure of speaking to DJ Lag about the mix he has kindly provided us with.

Following on from the maverick pop auteur and film composer’s European Film Award-winning score to 'Under The Skin', and her 'Jackie' soundtrack, this is Mica’s first musical accompaniment for animation, by revered designer Marisuke Eguchi, animated by STUDIO4ºC.

Dead Fader "Jenny153 Remixes" will be released on November 17th 2017, the album "Jenny153" follows on December 1st 2017, both on vinyl and digital.

John Cohen aka Dead Fader first arrived on the label in 2016, with It Works 1 - a brace of warping, high energy electronic music compositions that while largely unclassifiable in genre, maintain a gloriously vibrant, emotive sensibility that owes much to early IDM excursions, and the more abstract tenets of the Krautrock genre. That said - the artist cites anything from Kanye West to Bach and back again as informing the
decidedly experimental and potentially confounding work - and his latest offering for the Milan based label continues to riff on this open ended mesh of influence to great effect.

The new LP, Jenny 153, runs out across nine tracks and operates at the fertile juncture between Classical and Club Music compositional structures, and examines the crossover points between the two disciplines.
According to the artist, the work deals with themes of acceptance and an “opening up” emotionally - and a palpable sense of catharsis runs deep through the recordings. Colourful and undeniably cohesive, in spite of it’s rhythmic complexity - the recordings present a vital snapshot of the potential space that exists on the periphery of the dance music genre.

The original material is buoyed by a formidable remix package, featuring Downwards affiliate JK Flesh - who turns in a caustic reinterpretation of FYI; Roly Porter of Vex’d and Tri Angle fame, who takes on Raw Food; and Planet Mu’s Konx-Om-Pax, who’s reimagining of Life Cycle closes out proceedings. It’s an admirable line up, in keeping with the aesthetic concerns of Cohen’s excellent LP - and the chosen artists turn in respectful but wholly personal work - making for an excellent addition to growing Parachute discography.

Gobstopper alumni Loom returns to the label for his third outing since debuting with ‘Grade’ back in 2014. 

Now a founding member of club collective and party, Acid Fantasy — a popular club night he has helped run for the past year alongside Akito and Nervous Horizon duo TSVI and Wallwork — Loom’s palette has continued to expand and evolve, as evidenced by sparkling new record, ‘London Ambient’. 

Where ‘Grade’ and 2016 follow-up ‘European Heartache’ functioned around experimental grime tropes and fractious melody, ‘London Ambient’ unfurls broader, complex landscapes and sounds, inspired by discovering ‘so much new music’ working in London record shops over the last two years. “I’ve been introduced to so much new stuff, music I never would have heard before”, Loom explains, “…and these new influences gave me loads more drive to start making music”. 

Written with a wide-eyed sense of discovery, ‘London Ambient’ flexes between futuristic, sci-fi soundscapes (‘Heavy Glow’), sprawling acid-y club trips (‘Aacccid’) and sub-heavy, rave breaks (‘Saturday Job At Laser Quest’). These myriad sounds, bookended by the lush ‘Heavy Glow’ and dreamy, bubbling soundscape, ‘Forever’, compound Loom’s new-found sense of discovery — a fitting motif for a label that continues to grow and re-mould with every release.

A pillar of Bristol's ultra-fertile bass music community, Pinch has been turning out speaker-rattling rhythms since the early days of dubstep. Although his more recent output – along with that of his labels, Tectonic and Cold Recordings – has focused on more hybridized technoid sounds, his new 'Brain Scan' EP finds him revisiting the classic dubstep template. The record is slated to arrive on November 17 via Australian label Aquatic Lab, but we were given the chance to debut the thumping "Street Light" on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.

This is one of the best podcasts we've put here on Unsound's humble soundcloud page. In fact, when we heard it we almost decided to start our own record label. It from the duo Demdike Stare, a dark and evocative collage whose slow-moving twists and turns wrap their way around the listener like a long length of sonic rope. The mix perfectly intersects with Unsound's 2010 theme, "Horror - the pleasure of fear and unease." Not much more to say other than LISTEN TO IT and spread the word.
