IMAABS X LECHUGA ZAFIRO - CLUB VIRAL MIX

Few people have shaken up the dance world as much as Ron Morelli in recent years. With his punk attitude and lo fi aesthetics, his L.I.E.S. label has flooded the underground world with raw, dirty, imperfect music for freaks and outsiders. The New Yorker himself produces a sketchy variety of sound that draws on “the fear and repulsion of basic human interaction,” amongst other things, and he has also nurtured his own community of likeminded artists. Together they have made for an unlikely but influential crew of weirdos whose take on noise is truly singular. 

The one hour set he has served up for us here is just the same. It is a largely atmospheric affair that marries knackered drums with glassy melodies, deep space energies with an impending sense of apocalyptic doom. Always absorbing and subversive, this is insular music that runs a gamut of emotions from tortured to optimistic and thus keeps you trapped in Morelli’s musical head from start to finish.

Pablo de Vargas, the producer and DJ from Montevideo is very versed in global sounds. Known as @LechugaZafiro, the 27 year old musician has been described as “a fine example of an increasingly multicultural underground that mashes together regional styles for futuristic music”. The co-founder of @Salviatek –the record label he created with @Pobvio from Uruguay– and part of the @NAAFI roster, Vargas understands the electronic music of Latin America as a vital part of the sonic landscape of the world, not one that should be examined apart. This week, Lechuga Zafiro enters the i-D music catalog with a heavy and ultra fun mix, made with the sole purpose of intrigue your ears and soul.

While prolific as a member of drone supergroup Emeralds, Discogs has the count at almost fifty releases in six years, his solo records have emerged at a slower pace. That extra time certainly wasn’t wasted. Wrapped in ideas from Greek myth or surrealist landscapes each plunges into a world and pulls us with it. Stands, his latest LP, continues that trend. It’s an infinitely rendered landscape to explore, listen, and get lost in. In addition to the mix, a snapshot of current favourites, Steve was kind enough to dive into a few questions, touching on everything from Pythagoras, to his home base of Cleveland, to Star Trek: Voyager.
