The Song of the Pink Lake
According to legend, its color comes from the spirit of an innocent man unjustly drowned. The lake turned pink as an eternal reminder of the crime.
The Lament of the Pink Lake.
Many moons ago, when the baobabs still whispered secrets to the Sahel winds, a young man named Mamadou lived in the village of Niaga. He was a fisherman, a dreamer, and a singer of the waters. His voice, they say, could calm storms and make flamingos dance. But his pure soul stirred jealousy in troubled hearts.
One day, after a dispute over salt land, Mamadou was accused of a theft he never committed. The elders, blinded by rumors and pressure, pronounced his sentence: he was to be thrown into Lake Retba, whose waters were then crystal clear.
With his ankles tied and his heart cleansed, Mamadou was silently submerged. There were no screams, only a song that flowed from her lips as she descended: a prayer for justice, for truth, for memory.
That night, the lake trembled. The stars were reflected in its waters like tears, and at dawn, the town awoke to a miracle: the lake had changed color. A deep pink, like the blood of innocence, like the blush of shame.
Since then, Le Lac Rose sings with the wind. Fishermen say that, at dusk, a distant melody can be heard, as if Mamadou were still singing from the depths. And each rosy reflection reminds the world that injustice leaves traces that not even time can erase.
