Repetition Compulsion: Why do we repeat the past?

"Mood Swings" is a piece for piano that represents the variations of a certain emotion. Here, in particular, the emotion used is sadness, and how sadness can sometimes be exchange for hope.
This piece reflects those moments in life where feeling sad is an inevitable emotion but deep down there is hope for what is coming next.
"Mood Swings" takes inspiration on this hope that us humans feel when trying to let go of something that has been bothering us.

Mood Swings

Trois Moments Hollandais is a string quartet written for the Quatuor Bozzini. This piece is the result of a project with the group. This piece is in three movements, about 1 minute each, and each one of these represent different occasions that I encountered since I moved to the Netherlands. 
	
“A Slight Breeze in my Ear”, the first movement, represents the sound of the wind passing through my ears while I’m doing my daily bike ride to the train station. 

The second movement, entitled “Hedgehog” describes a moment when I was arriving late at home and found next to my garage a small hedgehog walking around with its tiny legs. 

The last movement, “I have to catch the train”, represents the feeling of arriving late to a train. It uses a ostinato that reflects the arrival of the train. It ends with me barely catching it.

"Abat-Jour" by Fernando Pessoa reflects on life's transience and the intricate interplay of emotions. Pessoa uses the metaphor of a lampshade to explore the balance between illumination and obscurity. The poem invites the reader, in this case, the listeners to contemplate on existence. The lampshade symbolizes the search for meaning, reflecting on joy, sorrow, clarity and ambiguity. Overall, the poem encourages readers to ponder the dualities of the human experience.
 
This piece uses the contemplativeness of the poem exploring different textures, harmonies and provides musicality to its beauty. This piece was composed in collaboration with the soprano Íris Brandão.

Description:

Dein ruhiger Zufluchtsort ("Your peaceful refuge") was composed for the One Minute Symphony project in collaboration with the Residentie Orkest. This piece draws its inspiration from an interview with Johan Aichmayr, a twelve-year-old Austrian student from the Jong Talent program at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. Johan shared with me the significance of a cherished place close to his heart: his summer house in the mountains of Loser, Austria. 

He vividly described how this house evokes the essence of his hometown, offering him a profound sense of peace and nostalgia. Johan fondly recounted his favorite pastime at this idyllic retreat: playing his trumpet on the mountaintop and listening to the echoes cascading down the slopes. Inspired by Johan's heartfelt narrative, I wove these evocative images into the fabric of this composition, also incorporating the first theme from Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8.

This piece seeks to capture the tranquility and beauty of Johan’s beloved mountain home, creating a musical reflection of his serene refuge.

David Richter is an emerging Portuguese and Dutch composer currently studying Composition (Bachelor Degree) and Conducting (Minor) at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague in The Netherlands.
