Gabber Modus Operandi, Indonesian duo.  
DJ Kasimyn and artist Ican Harem create hybridised high-intensity dance music, where modern rave meets ancient tradition with satire and internet humour. 
Informed by punk, metal and experimental noise whilst inspired by the traditional Javanese dance, jathilan, which sees performers enter altered states or appear possessed, Gabber Modus Operandi are an explosive force in native Bali. 
In 2019 the duo released their debut album PUXXXIMAXXX  and second album ‘HOXXXYA’ on Shanghai label SVBKVLT featuring a blazing kaleidoscope of Indonesian music, from Dangdut Koplo, happy hardcore, gamelan “and everything in between.”

As Gabber Modus Operandi, vocalist Ican Harem and DJ Kasimyn have spent the past couple of years raising hell across their native Bali and beyond. The duo connected over their shared love of disparate musics, including metal, grindcore and noise from the local punk scene, regional sounds like dangdut, koplo and gamelan plus footwork, happy hardcore and experimental styles – though they’ll tell you they don’t differentiate genres so distinctly. These influences all seeped into the two albums they have under their belt quite naturally, and the group took the sounds of 2018’s Puxxximaxxx and 2019 follow-up HOXXXYA to the global circuit last year. As a live act, they thrive: Kasimyn handles deck duties while Ican Harem’s MCing goes beyond rapped hooks to involve exhilarating screeches and guttural bellows, all the while brandishing chains and bringing a crucial sense of physicality to the stage. The pair deliver a seismic, hour-long barrage of a mix for Truancy Volume 262, only letting up to leave you properly winded.

GABBER MODUS OPERANDI - Pedas Sumatra

Kasimyn is one-half of Gabber Modus Operandi, the Bali, Indonesia-based duo that catapulted to the forefront of the Southeast Asian underground in 2018. As is the case with G.M.O.'s bewildering amalgam of modern and traditional/ritualistic sounds, it's not easy to wrap one's head around the origins of the music in Kasimyn's mix here, the result of a month of sharing links between himself, Ican Harem, and Enggohoi (OHOI records) (@enggohoi).

There's a myriad of complex historical and intercultural connections at the root of this music. According to Kasimyn, it is essentially grassroots synth-based dance music that is often played at wedding parties, harvest ceremonials and other events. Some of the wedding parties might turn into impromptu raves but generally the music is not intended for proper club purposes.

Kasimyn adds: "This music is mostly influenced by polyrhythmic 'Karo' traditions from northern Sumatra, and a new form of 'Rentak Kudo'; a fast-paced dance music genre which literally means 'Horse Stomp'. According to popular myth, the earlier Rentak Kudo events were so loud, you could hear them from neighbouring villages. The singer / MC, who is basically the master of ceremony, speaks in a lyrical form called 'Asuh' (or 'Pengashuh' in official Indonesian Bahasa language), which means 'caretaker' or 'guardian'. Additionally, a big variety of Persian and Arabic vocal and melody patterns are incorporated, since Sumatra was one of the first gateways for Islam to Indonesia in the 13th century, as introduced by Arab Muslim traders and the missionary activities by scholars."
