Infinite Machine is happy to welcome interdisciplinary artist, Forces, to the IM family with the release of Inertia, Joonas Siren’s fifth album since he began putting out music in 2018. With previous cosigns from Aphex Twin, Zuli & Daniel Ruane, Forces is known for creating sharp digital textures and ever-surprising rhythmic structures using live coding software such as SuperCollider and TidalCycles.

With a background in fine art, Forces is never one to shy away from conceptual thinking about his output and this album is no different. Engaging with the work of theorist Franco Berardi (particularly recent book ‘Futurability’), Inertia tries to soundtrack the political malaise of the last few decades and the growing sense of powerlessness and inability to avoid the many crises generated by the structures of capital.

Forces opens up proceedings with ‘Algorithmic Governance’, where doom-laden bass drones pulse and groan over erratic drum hits which play in alien time signatures, outside of the realm of full, human comprehension. The algorithmic control of the track’s title could refer to Franco Berardi’s interest in social media, a force which simplifies and monetises social communication, or it could refer to his approach to co-creation with his software of choice. With many compositions, Forces sets up rules or parameters in his code but allows elements of randomisation and evolution, inviting SuperCollider’s algorithm to become a co-author alongside him.

‘Morphogenesis’ begins life as a straight-forward, hard techno composition but things are not as simple as they may first seem. Over its 5 minute duration, the stable 4/4 beat seems to collapse in on itself, potentially nodding to the mood of our current socio-economic moment. This is followed up by the formidable ‘Swarm’, a masterclass in algorythmic synthesis that’ll slice your brain in half on first listen. A stuttering of buzz saw-styled synth tones sweep, stretch and pitch bend themselves in ways that would be almost impossible to achieve within a classic DAW.

Named after the Berardi book that inspired Forces, ‘Futurability’ takes things in a slightly softer direction. Reminiscent of early Tim Hecker releases (with an added cybernetic edge), ‘Futurability’ has a sedative yet uneasy tone to it, as if the song is reflecting the dual sense of concern that things should change in society but our helplessness to actually change them, especially in the ecological or economic arena.

A tale of two halves, ‘Soul at Work’ starts out as a blissfully serene piece of what you could describe as code-based shoegaze which is then chewed up and spat out by algorithmic distortion and disorientating glitches from the midway point onwards.

Forces ends Inertia on a more hopeful note with the David Graeber-sampling ‘Horizon of Possibility’. Unlike ‘Soul at Work’, the lush drone work is left intact on this arrangement - maybe signaling the potential existence of different structures that are more positive and robust for all.

With Inertia, Forces pushes his singular musical style even further, to more hyperbolic and emotive heights. Embracing the eccentric randomness of the SuperCollider software and working in concepts from contemporary theorists, this album is a mediation on the current moment created alongside technology that also feels hyper-relevant to today.

World Canvas has a pleasure to introduce a new and exciting addition to the platform’s roster, a Helsinki-based mystical entity and artist nenúhîr. Having slowly honed their craft, following a string of self-released songs, album and recorded live performances, nenúhîr presents their new EP ‘đarva’ which brings together extracted sounds from YLE (Finnish National Radio) archives and abrasive electronic composition, featuring additional saxophone instrumentation from werna. The world of 'đarva' is a glimpse into a fantastical body of tar, as reflected on the release’s title - an allusion to Finnish terva and its historically binding qualities in and around the agrarian societies.
‘đarva’s and nenúhîr's storytelling capabilities shine most bright through its passages where sparse moments give way for imagining and submerging oneself into a bleak, yet beautiful pond of terva.

The 27th release of katharsis is the album “Alien Implants” by the Siberian artist and composer Dmitri Mazurov. Throughout the 9 tracks and 77 minutes of the album, the listener is submerged into a haunting maze of mystifying experimental electro-acoustic sound portraying distant conspiracies of another time and place. This almost paradoxical juxtaposition of classical instruments with elements from contemporary electronic music is quite novel to katharsis, but fits perfectly with our vision of showcasing the multifaceted emotional and expressive properties of music.

The album starts harshly off with a flow of rocks, stones and underwater gurgling on the intro track “Burevo”, before a flooding of more delicate but yet restless sounds on “Mimicry” performed by Kymatic Ensemble, who are also featured on the evocative title track “Alien Implants”. This expressive focus is vivid throughout the whole album, but especially on tracks like “Hauntology” performed with novel techniques on the accordion played by Roman Malyaykin, or on the archetypical crying of a guitar played with a comb on the track “Weeping”. The whole thing is concluded by an alienesque communication on the track “Morphing”, which is premiered with the announcement of the pre-order.

“I am very happy to deliver a special mix to the very unique ÖÖÖ label. Here is 1h of "ethereal techno" that I love so much. I usually listen to this kind of ambient music when I need to calm my inner boils. It's called "Monomyth" and I hope you'll enjoy again my hearing of the underworld. This is a tribute to the mythical Joseph Campbell. He was an amazing mythologist of the 20th century. He dedicated his life to finding the common denominator of all mythologies. According to him, there would be a universal structuring of the mythological narratives, that is a global hero with multiple faces. So, a common thread with multiple variations. Obviously, we can contest the deterministic aspect of his postulate and claim the uniqueness of human cultures, but we can find the universal in the human imagination and creativity. Indeed, many prehistoric cultures have simultaneously had similar creative ideas if we think for example of the petroglyphs. We could succinctly conclude that each human possesses the capacity of imagination and creation. All would depend on the weight of its context which would have more or less put it in sleep. “

An ode to failure!

Departing from the image of the genius artists, the Hit&Miss compilation wants to show the hidden parts of creation, by embracing missteps and abandonment as a natural part of any artistic journey. 

Open to all members of the Global URL Nation, it proposed a new home for projects that couldn't find a place to exist otherwise, due to artistic (self-)exigency, technical problems, bad timing or any other reason often unknown to the general public. 

With more than 20 artists from a broad range of styles, experience and locations, it gathers unfinished projects such as aborted WIP, forgotten drafts, lost files, unconvincing demos, compulsive emotional bursts or technical experimentations. 

With all its flaws and raw cuts, Hit&Miss asserts the strength of trial and error, and cherishes the impossibility to develop an idea into a finished object as a learning process towards one's growth.

Dogx is an alter ego entity from Yogyakarta, a metalhead who used to be a death metal drummer back in 2009. As per now, he’s working as a visual artist, and ghost producer. While broadening his encyclopedia of sounds, he has a perspective on life that is contrary to what should be within normal limits. He is a shadow that eats all human sins, chews them, drinks them, licks them, and vomits them out in the form of sound frequencies because for him sound is something that can coexist with the human subconscious or conscious mind.
