I recorded this song in my bedroom with my producer, Brennan Loney, and my roomie, Jaymes Young. We didn't record this in a studio but we think it sounds pretty damn good. We hope this song brings people to a happy place and inspires them to face their anxieties. Groundhog day is about the hope of breaking out of anxiety/depression. It's about feeling trapped in what feels like an inescapable dark place. This song focuses on breaking out of that depressive cycle, and leaving your darkness to heal yourself.

Concept:

The song is about a guy who notices a stunningly beautiful woman in a cafe/bar. She’s alone in the corner reading a book. The room disappears around her. Rather than going up to her, he keeps his distance. He doesn’t want to ruin the moment as it’s occurring before him. As badly as he truly wants to meet her, he never approaches. He feels unworthy of her beauty.

The verses represent reality and the chorus fantasy. The song is inherently sexual and has a beautiful movement to it. I wanted to create a visual element that was as strongly suggestive as the lyrics/melody are (available on YouTube). Sour Love describes this feeling of lost love. Yet, at the same time, he can accept it. The bitterness doesn’t overtake him because he has a strong respect for beauty and has control of his desires.

How many children of the 90s do we have up in here?! Well, I am one of them and this song holds a special place in my heart. With nostalgic joy, I bring you my re-imagination of The New Radicals’ 90s jam, #YouGetWhatYouGive. It reminds us to be hopeful, present, and dream big even when life throws the worst at you - a message that’s still as relevant in 2020 as it’s ever been. 

Big thanks to Brennan Loney for producing and helping me arrange it. We really brought this song back to life through a new palette of sounds and some chordal reharms. I hope this version can help bring a little light back into all of our lives. Mortality is real and life is fragile, but we can stay strong together.
