After the dynamo sophomore release that was 2013's "Curiosities", New Zealand's Lord Echo returns to Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz label, this time producing Kiwi trio The Elder Statesman comprised of twin brothers and Wellington fixtures Christopher (piano) and Daniel (double bass) Yeabsley with Lord Echo himself on percussion and drums.

On the "A" side, Montreux Sunrise is mellow meander through a laidback early 70s souljazz vibes, while "Trans Alpine Express" picks things up on the B side with a deep, spiritual piano groove, upfront doublebass, and Echo's percussion perfectly in the pocket.

A timeless gem of a 7" from Bastard Jazz, releasing their own namesake for once!

I messaged Laura about going to the show- she answered with “Don’t tell Marko, it’ll be a surprise!”.  A day later a message from Dawn (their manager):  “I had an idea to ask you to spin…”.   Me: “Yes, I can totally do that”. The rest is…well it’s a bucket list fulfillment, that’s what it is!

This is from the 2nd day: I started with Weather Storm (Massive Attack- before this show, theirs was THE biggest opening slot I had when they played Houston in the early 2000s, AND the weather looked ominous, but luckily no rain), took a few detours into reggae, hip hop, mixed in Heatwave and managed to “slip in” MARKSONTHEKEYS (a track I did in the early 2000s that has Mark on The Keys,  I believe the keyboard also had some marks, but I digress).  

Picked up the tempo from there and was able to end with a current anthem Oscar P’s “Split Personality”.   Excuse me if I stumbled a tiny bit here and there- it’s part of the craft.  Thanks for listening!

I almost forgot I can share whatever I want, perfect or not. This is raw, no rework, just a draft from a bigger dream. I planned on polishing this mix, not accounting that my window would be smashed and my equipment gone without a trace. I think it makes this all more worth while. All the more metaphorical. What cannot be seen cannot be taken, my roots remain, guzzling the rain, the soil of my soul will replenish any fallen petals. My passion for this art medium is in me. Not with me. I could record a mix with the right and left lobes of my brain if my ears had a USB port.
