Episode 24 of DRIFT welcomes the DJ and promoter Padawan Sound (a.k.a. Paddy H-K). He has an impressive depth of musical knowledge and is involved, and active, in a large number of music communities, both online, and in his hometown of Leeds. First and foremost amongst these, is his own project, Think Tank: A Place For Your Head. Since their inception in 2017, Think Tank have sought to reframe the more hedonistic aspects of club culture, by curating ambient listening spaces that foster creativity, communal reflection, and recovery. Until very recently, they held a residency on KMAH Radio, which sadly came to an end when the station stopped broadcasting. You can, however, still listen to a back-catalogue of their shows by following the link below – something I strongly recommend you to do as there are some truly beautiful ambient mixes in there waiting to be discovered. The Think Tank events and radio shows provided a great deal of inspiration when I was first starting DRIFT and the way in which they reshape conceptions of club culture is something which I have always deeply admired. It is an honour and a privilege to have the man behind this, Paddy H-K, contribute to the series.

Padawan Sound began piecing together this mix at a time of year when emotions such as grief and loss weighed heavily on his mind. Music can often be an outlet for emotions – both positive and negative – and he attempts to convey those feelings in this mix through the intricate layering, warping and editing of textures, field recordings and samples. These sounds are expertly intertwined with an exquisite selection of ambient tracks – some of which carry the mix forward and some of which give just a few seconds to enhance or embellish one particular section. The mix was recorded using turntables, CDJs and Ableton, a combination of hardware and software which allowed many of the tracks to be chopped, looped and edited heavily using effects to create new sounds and textures. It is through this approach that he creates a truly unique listening experience which immerses, moves, and begs to be listened to again and again.
