Episode 29 of DRIFT sees a return to Edinburgh with a dive into some of J Wax’s favourite chilled and non-club tracks. As a member of Palidrone (a collective which also includes previous DRIFT guests Dansa and Provost), he has been involved in some face melting nights, bringing legendary artists such as DJ Stingray and Errorsmith to the capital to play to sold out crowds. Despite clubs being closed, you can still keep up to date with the Palidrone crew’s output thanks to their slot on local station EH-FM where they play everything from house and garage to breakneck jungle and hardcore. J Wax has also been busy on the production front, with his recent vinyl release ‘Blink’ selling out on Scottish label Kouncil Kuts. Featuring 5 serious electro tracks which are sure to be club staples in the summer, the EP also includes a collaboration with up and coming artist SAAH as well as the J Wax and DeeJay Bloom classic, FourFifty, pressed on wax for the first time!

This mix gives an insight into J Wax’s home listening favourites - a farsight from the pace and energy of his usual breaky electro sets; this mix contains a relaxed and eclectic blend of tracks perfectly suited to a summer’s afternoon. Featuring everything from Memphis Horrorcore and deep, enthralling breaks to head-nod-inducing house and techno, it provides a 40 min break from reality which is sure to brighten your day.

DRIFT 029: J Wax

DRIFT returns with the 32nd episode from Berlin-based Loft Garten. As co-founder of the exciting new experimental label NIA Records, they find themselves situated at the centre of the fast-paced electronic music scene in the German capital and, alongside co-founders Collo and Delfine, have come up with one of my favourite releases of the year so far. Intentions Vol 1 is a compilation of experimental tracks filled with echoing hyper-melancholia, fragmented orchestral pieces and yearning ambient alongside the occasional scattered and wapred club sound. I have used multiple songs from this release in my own mixes and radio shows, including Loft Garten's own track let's meet by the canal. It's with great pleasure that I welcome them to the series for DRIFT 032!

The mix is a sublime blend of experimental tracks with wistful, textured ambient seamlessly transitioning into distant percusive elements, a variety of sounds which paint an overall picture of longing and time away. It features many of my favourite artists and is a nod to all those who have been pushing the experimental exlectronic scene into uncharted waters over the past few years!

DRIFT 032: Loft Garten

For the 33rd episode of DRIFT, we travel down to Liverpool for an hour of home listening tracks provided by Cosmic Chaos. His club night Natural States has been a staple of the Liverpool scene over the last few years, bringing techno, breaks and a whole host of otherworldly sounds from artists such as Solid Blake to iconic venues across the city. More recently, Natural States has progressed into a label: the first release 'Danse Freak' being a hard-hitting techno four tracker which maintains the high-octane energy curated in their club nights and is produced by Cosmic Chaos himself.

For his contribution to the series, Cosmic Chaos stays away from the four to the floor techno tracks which tend to underpin his productions and dj sets. Instead, he allows a glimpse into his favourite tunes to listen to outisde of the club sphere and takes us on a journey through spacey funk and deep jazzy electronic to create a perfectly flowing mix from start to finish. Studded with some recognisable favourites from Aphex Twin and Mala alongside some superbly curated deep cuts, the hour long blend hits the spot perfectly!

As we move further into Summer, the good vibes of the DRIFT x Midnight Bass collaborative series continue where they left off last week with a dreamy, hour-long submission for episode number two. Stepping up to the decks, we’re proud to welcome Edinburgh based DJ Pollyanna, who presents an hour long foray into fast-paced yet laid-back DnB, hip-hop vocals, RnB influenced liquid and much more. As the founder of the Sunday Service at Edinburgh’s Doghouse pub, she is no stranger to the lighter side of breaks, jungle and DnB, and the monthly party has gone from strength to strength, giving local DJs a chance to explore the easy-listening side of the genre in a live setting. It was, therefore, a no brainer to get her involved here, and she’s proved us right with a seriously enjoyable mix tinged with jazzy loops, chilled-out MCs and basslines that will have you nodding your head the whole way through!

[EH-FM] SSID Guest Mix for Xivro

For episode 37, we're delighted to shine the spotlight on talented, Northampton-based DJ, Moose. With residencies on London stations Mode and Voices, he regularly fills the airwaves with forward thinking and exciting uk club sounds, focussing on leftfield music from garage to jungle. Alongside this, he is a skilled producer and boasts a string of excellent releases over the last few years including recent gems on labels Solitude and Profound Sound. 

Stepping back slightly from his usual style for this mix, he sticks to the genres he knows well but explores the more chilled out end of the spectrum, with choice selections from artists such as Om Unit and Yoofee. His aim for his contribution to the series was to touch on a Sunday afternoon feeling, using tunes he’s always had but never found an opportunity to play through normal channels such as club and radio. In his own words, not getting to play them as much genuinely improved the mix as it was a lot more fun to mix & was super excited putting the tracklist together, being something different to scheduled programming. This perfectly mirrors the DRIFT philosophy and we're absolutely delighted to be able to share it with you on a Sunday afternoon!

Miri Malek is a Fife-born, Scottish-Iranian DJ & Producer playing a powerful blend of low-end influenced selections, with a focus on stranger textures and dark, percussive grooves. They are the founder of Dwam, a Berlin-based interdisciplinary platform running events and arts residencies.

For their DRIFT mix, Miri Malek expertly threads together deep, pulsating leftfield cuts with mutated dancehall and ethereal downtempo to create a seamless mix of experimental electronic sounds. They had this to say about it:

DRIFT 003: Mystery Season

For the 10th iteration of DRIFT, we welcome Edinburgh based trio Handmade. They have had a meteoric rise to the top of the Edinburgh scene over the last year, playing multiple sets per week. The Hectors House residents have supported the likes of K-Hand, Optimo and Move D among many others and hold down residencies at Cabaret Voltaire and House of Gods alongside frequent outings to venues such as 99 hanover Street, Sneaky Petes and Eastside. The group also had a recent trip through to glasgow to play at one of my favourite clubs in the country, La Cheetah. Every set they play is always exciting and refreshing so was glad to get them on board for DRIFT 010!

For this mix, Handmade bring a more chilled out version of what they know best: deep soulful cuts with a large handful of jazzy, World influences thrown in for good measure. They create a dreamy soundscape filled with warm bass, realxed vocals and euphoric melodies which is sure to keep you smiling throughout the hour!

DRIFT 010: Hand-made

Another month, another mix. This edition welcomes Edinburgh based DJ and Rossz Records label boss: Renata. Originally from Hungary, she has been heavily involved in the scene here in Edinburgh putting on outstanding parties in clubs across the city. In addition to this, her EH-FM show, Music For A Single Plant never fails to bring inovative and exciting music to the airwaves. However, her label, Rossz Records, is where she places most of her time. With two stellar releases last year, it is really starting to pick up steam. Both compilations and filled with an amazing array of otherworldy IDM, ambient and braindance sounds - all handpicked by Renata herself. With rumour of a new digital release on the horizon, the label is well worth keeping an eye on in 2020.

For her DRIFT mix, Renata brings a range of chilled out ambient sounds. Citing the winter months as inspiration, it flows though deep, undulating soundscapes filled with experimental overtones and creates a truly unique listening experience. Ideal for attentive, late night listening - curl up and do nothing and let the sounds transport you!

DRIFT 014: Renata

As lockdown continues into its third week, we’re delighted to bring a welcome distraction in the form of DRIFT 016 by Frazer Ray (FKA Soundbwoy Killah). Having gone from strength to strength in recent years, he was due to appear in Edinburgh at The Mash House with Artiisan last month. Unfortunately, the event did not go ahead and everyone involved was understandably gutted! Don’t worry, however, as we have a 60 minute mix from the man himself to tide you over until the event is rescheduled.

The London based DJ’s style envelopes everything the UK scene has to offer and his releases vary from garage and house right through to breakneck jungle. This is especially apparent on his stellar album Halcyon Daze which came out on Sneaker Social Club last year. Other outstanding works include his Tell Me EP (Warehouse Rave) which propelled him into a small group of producers at the forefront of the UK breaks scene. In addition to all this, he holds a residency at Rinse FM. His show has had some outstanding guests such as Interplanetary Criminal, Breaka and L U C Y with his most recent show consisting of 2 hours of his own unreleased music. Well worth checking out!

For his DRIFT mix, Frazer brings a wonderful collection of the more chill end of the UK spectrum. Filled with floaty breaks, trippy 2 step beats and atmospheric vibes, it is ideal listening during isolation. Stick it on and drift away for 60 minutes!

As part of the Palidrone collective, he has helped to bring some outstanding guests to Edinburgh over the last few years with some of the biggest names in the scene playing for them. Most recently, they brought electro legend DJ Stingray to the Mash House alongside firm favourite Solid Blake! As part of Artiisan, I was buzzing to be asked to play on the bar in support of this event so it only seemed right to get Dan on the series!

Throughout this hour, he delves deep into the outer reaches of electronic music bringing some truly unique and wonderful sounds. Deep, experimental tracks flow into each other seamlessly with sparse yet effective breaks, bleeps and percussion keeping the mix constantly exciting. Eerie melodies and futuristic vocals are woven into many of the songs and transport the listener to a different plane of existence. A brilliantly original and unique take on the drift idea!

DRIFT 017: Dansa

The 19th iteration in the DRIFT series has been put together by the extremely talented ona:v of EPiKA Edinburgh. She has a ridiculously impressive output rate with a wide array of streams, mixes and radio shows being released fresh each week. ona:v is part of the Sisu roster and holds down two radio show residencies (on EH-FM as Circle and Fnoob Techno Radio as ReView). On top of all this, she is also the founding member of the Edinburgh based all female DJ collective. If you have the chance to catch her playing in a club (or to tune into her streams) expect high-energy electro tracks in her sets, as well as a bit of nostalgic early-2000s rave anthems, all mixed with high-bpm techno.

For this mix she takes a step back from her usual high-intensity sound to bring a wonderful selection reminiscent of a festival stage closing on the final night when there is hardly anyone left and the sound moves into and ethereal trippy dimension. Slower electro and deep bassey sounds fill this hour and although it may sound slightly on the clubby side for DRIFT, she has selected tracks which are close to her which do not fit into her normal sets and thus the set perfectly embodies the drift idea. This blend of old tracks and new releases is well worth checking out as you sit outside in the current sunny weather.

DRIFT 019: ona:v

Stepping up to the floor for DRIFT 021 we have Dublin-born, London-based DJ, Oisin. He actually contacted the series with an idea for a mix and I'm delighted to finally be putting it out. After listening back to some of the other mixes he'd put together, I was imediately impressed by the conistency in track selection and his ability to create and develop a unique sound. Whether blending classic disco records or cutting edge high-bpm electro, he is always on point and DRIFT 021 is no exception!

Oisin likes to have fun behind the decks rather than meticulously planning the entire set, an adhoc approach which allows him to cultivate an impressive flow over the duration. For this mix, he hit the record button and played whatever he was feeling and in this case something truly clicked. This led to a wonderfully eclectic mixture of funky new beat, italo, balearic and much more.

DRIFT 021: Oisin

Over 2 years into the DRIFT series, we are proud to present the 25th episode by Tension. Tension has long been on the radar making wabves over in Ireland both as a producer / DJ and as co-founder of record label Flood. His productions provide experimentation in global and industrial club styles with a central focus on left-field melody, vast instrumentation and hard hitting percussive rhythms. Flood has been the centrepiece of his collaborative efforts with fellow label founder Doubt as well as various artists in the underground club scene from the UK, America and larger Europe. Tension’s debut LP ‘In Cascade’ Released on Flood in June of this year and stood out in it's creative sound desgin and experimental rhythms. His monthly show on Dublin Digital Radio features regular mixes form himself as well as guests.

In his mix for Drift, Tension creates a varied blend of ambience, experimental percussion and several jazz cuts to showcase some of the music further afield from the dance floor which has served as an influence to him. The result is a mix which is gearded less towards club play and more towards attentive home listening.
